Manaji Rao Scindia, popularly known asManaji Phakde, was the legitimate heir of the eldest branch of theHouse of Scindia, but was passed over byMadhavrao I, who appointed his brotherMahadaji Shinde to succeed.[1]

In 1780, he joined forces with theChhatrapati ofKolhapur against thePeshwa government.[2]
