Mamta Mohandas (born 14 November 1984) is an Indian actress, producer and playback singer who primarily works inMalayalam,Tamil andTelugu films. Mamta is a recipient of several awards including aKerala State Film Award and twoFilmfare Awards South.

Mamta made her acting debut withMayookham (2005) and had her breakthrough withKadha Thudarunnu (2010), which earned her theFilmfare Award for Best Actress – Malayalam andKerala State Film Award for Second Best Actress.[1] She has since appeared in successful films such asArike (2012),My Boss (2012),Two Countries (2015),Udaharanam Sujatha (2017),Carbon (2018),Nine (2019),Kodathi Samaksham Balan Vakeel (2019),Forensic (2020),Jana Gana Mana (2022) andMaharaja (2024).[2]

Early life

Mamta was born on 14 November 1984[3][4] inManama,Bahrain,[5] toMalayali parents (Mohandas and Ganga) fromThalassery,Kannur. She attended theIndian School, Bahrain, until 2002.[6][7] She then pursued abachelor's degree incomputer science atMount Carmel College, Bangalore.[8]

Mamta modeled for print ads for companies such asIBM and Kalyan Kendra and modeled on the ramp for the Mysore Maharajah and Raymonds. She is trained inCarnatic music and inHindustani music.[9][10]

Film career

Mohandas debuted in the 2005Malayalam filmMayookham, directed byHariharan. The film did not do well at the box office.[11]

Subsequently, she acted alongsideMammootty inBus Conductor, withSuresh Gopi in the filmsAdbutham (2006) andLanka (2006), and alongsideJayaram inMadhuchandralekha (2006). She also played the female lead inBaba Kalyani withMohanlal. Later that year, she débuted in theTamil film industry, starring in theKaru Pazhaniappan directed filmSivappathigaram.[citation needed]

In 2007 she acted withMammootty in the filmBig B. She eventually stepped into theTelugu film industry as well, when she appeared in a supporting role in the filmYamadonga, directed bySS Rajamouli.[citation needed] She had lent her voice for a couple of songs in this film too.[citation needed] In 2008, she appeared in 7 films, predominantly in Telugu-language films. Her first release was her débutKannada filmGooli. She then starred in the filmKrishnarjuna, playing the lead female role.[citation needed]Victory was her next assignment as lead actress, following which she appeared in acameo role in her only Tamil release that year,Kuselan. Three more Telugu releases featured Mamta, includingHomam, directed byJD Chakravarthy andSrinu Vaitla'sKing.[citation needed]

In 2009, she starred in the comedy filmGuru En Aalu alongsideMadhavan, and the thrillerPassenger, sharing screen space withDileep andSreenivasan, respectively. The filmPassenger, in which she played the role of a television reporter, became a turning point in Mohandas's career. She was initially approached to play the lead role in the 2009 Telugu dark fantasyArundathi. She refused the offer, and the movie went on to become one of the highest grossers that year. In 2010, she worked withJayaram inKadha Thudarunnu[12] directed bySathyan Anthikkad, for which she won her firstBest Actress Award from Filmfare.[13] This film also won her theKerala State Film Award for Second Best Actress, the Vanitha award for best actress – Malayalam, the Mathrubhumi award for best actress – Malayalam and the Asianet award for the best actress- Malayalam. Other projects in 2010 includedMusafir withRahman,Anwar withPrithiviraj, andKedi withNagarjuna. Mamta's first film in 2011 was the Malayalam filmRace, in which she played the role of Niya, wife of a cardio surgeon Abey (Kunchacko Boban). The film failed to do well at the box office.[14] Her next release in Malayalam wasNaayika.[15] In 2012, she appeared in her third Tamil film,Thadaiyara Thaakka, directed by Magizh Thirumeni.[citation needed] In 2013 she starred inPaisa Paisa with Indrajith.[16][17] In 2014 she starred inTo Noora with Love as a Muslim character.[18]

Mohandas made a comeback to Malayalam movie industry with Ranjith Shankar's Mammooty starrerVarsham.[citation needed] She shared her screen space again with Dileep inTwo Countries after doingMy Boss with him.[citation needed]

In 2016, Mohandas starred oppositeMammootty inThoppil Joppan, and in early 2017, she signedCrossroad, an anthology film in which she plays an orthodox Muslim. She also appeared in an extended cameo inUdaharanam Sujatha withManju Warrier. In mid-2017, she signedDetroit Crossing akaRanam opposite Prithviraj, but had to opt out because she did not have fresh dates to allocate for the project.

In 2020 Mohandas acted in the crime thriller feature filmForensic in which she played the role of police officer Rithika Xavier IPS.[citation needed]

Singing

Mohandas is trained inCarnatic andHindustani music, and first sang playback in the Telugu filmRakhi, singing the title song underDevi Sri Prasad's direction, making her debut in the Telugu film industry as a singer before making her acting debut in Telugu. She went on to win the 2006Filmfare Best Female Playback Singer Award for that song.[19]

Subsequently, she was asked to sing several songs for composerDevi Sri Prasad, including "Akalesthe Annam Pedtha" for theChiranjeevi-starrerShankardada Zindabad (later dubbed asDaddy Mummy in the Tamil filmVillu), "36-24-36" for the filmJagadam, "Mia" forTulasi, and "Ghanana (Funny)" and the title song for the filmKing. Other music directors she has worked with includeM. M. Keeravani (for her own filmsYamadonga andKrishnarjuna, alsoChandamama),R. P. Patnaik (forAndamaina Mansulo),Chakri (forVictory), Nithin Raikwar (for her own filmHomam) andThaman (forJayeebhava).[citation needed]

In Tamil, she sang "Kaalai Kaalai" in the filmKaalai, which starredSilambarasan in the lead role. She sang "Idai Vazhi" for the comedy filmGoa under noted composerYuvan Shankar Raja's direction. Both songs featured her singing alongsideBenny Dayal. She was heard for the first time in her mother tongue, Malayalam, in the 2010 filmAnwar. She has also recorded a song for her filmThriller. In the film 'Mohabath', she sang a duet with Hariharan. She sang "Iravil Viriyum" in her 2012 filmArike. She sang "Karuppana Kannazhagi" in the film Aadupuliyattam.[20]

Personal life

Mamta got engaged to Prajith Padmanabhan, a Bahrain-based businessman, on 11 November 2011. The couple got married on 28 December 2011 inThalassery.[21][22] They got divorced in December 2012.[23] In June 2024, Mamta revealed that she is in a relationship.[24]

Mamta is a cancer survivor, and has battledHodgkin lymphoma since 2010.[25] In April 2013, her cancer relapsed[26] and she underwent treatment atUCLA.[21] Since 2014, she has resided inLos Angeles.[27][28][6] In 2023, she revealed that she had been diagnosed withVitiligo.[29]

Mamta is considered among the highest-paid Malayalam actresses.[45] In theKochi Times Most Desirable Women list, she was placed 7th in 2017,[46] 5th in 2018,[47] 8th in 2019,[48] and 17th in 2020.[49] In 2011, she became the brand ambassador of Kochi International Fashion Week.[50] In 2013, she became the brand ambassador forKerala Strikers inCelebrity Cricket League.[51]

Mohandas started working on television, by hosting the quiz showKaiyil Oru Kodi in 2012, which was later cancelled.[40] She has also judged two seasons ofD 4 Dance.[41] In 2020, Mamta launched her own production companyMamta Mohandas Productions.[52]
