Mammea is aflowering plantgenus with about 70species in thefamilyCalophyllaceae.[2] Its members areevergreentrees having edible fruits. Theflowers arepolygamous, with a unitarycalyx opening into two or three valvatesepals.[3] There are 4 to 8petals.Berries are formed, containing 1 to 4 seeds. The leaves are rigid, coriaceous and often have pellucid dots.
A least two species are found in tropical America and the West Indies (Mammea americana andM. immansueta), about 20 species, includingM. africana andM. usambarensis in mainland Africa and many inMadagascar, with the remainder inIndomalaya and the Pacific region.Plants of the World Online currently includes:[4]
