Tom Büdgen (born 19 May 1985) is a Dutchprofessional wrestler . He is signed toWWE , where he performs on theSmackDown brand under thering name Aleister Black .
Before signing with WWE, Büdgen was known for his extensive work on theindependent circuit under the ring nameTommy End , working for promotions across Europe, the United States, and Japan. He most notably wrestled forInsane Championship Wrestling (ICW),Progress Wrestling ,Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG), andWestside Xtreme Wrestling (wXw), holding numerous championships such as thewXw Unified World Heavyweight Championship ,wXw World Lightweight Championship ,wXw World Tag Team Championship ,ICW Tag Team Championship , andProgress Tag Team Championship .
Büdgen joined WWE'sNXT brand in April 2017, debuting atNXT TakeOver: Orlando . He won theNXT Championship once and theDusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic once (withRicochet ) before he was moved to theRaw brand, and was later drafted to the SmackDown brand. He then appeared sporadically before being released in 2021. From 2021 to 2025, Black was signed toAll Elite Wrestling (AEW), where he performed under the ring nameMalakai Black ; as the leader of theHouse of Black stable , he held theAEW World Trios Championship once withBrody King andBuddy Matthews before his departure in 2025. He returned to WWE later that year.
Tom Büdgen[ 6] was born on 19 May 1985 inAmsterdam ,Netherlands .[ 7] [ 9] He has an extensive background inmartial arts , having trained inkickboxing ,pencak silat ,[ 10] andMuay Thai , the former and lattermost under fellow compatriotBob Schrijber and former world championsLiam Harrison andAndy Howson , all of which he would later incorporate into his wrestling style.[ 11]
Professional wrestling career [ edit ] Independent circuit (2002–2016)[ edit ] Tommy End wrestlingDonovan Dijak in 2016 Under thering name Tommy End , Büdgen wrestled extensively on the Europeanindependent circuit starting with his debut on 18 June 2002, working for promotions such as Pro Wrestling Holland (PWH) and Pro Wrestling Showdown (PWS) in the Netherlands,Progress Wrestling andRevolution Pro Wrestling (RPW) in England,Insane Championship Wrestling (ICW) in Scotland,Over the Top Wrestling (OTT) in Ireland, andWestside Xtreme Wrestling (wXw) in Germany, as well as under the Union of European Wrestling Alliance umbrella, among others.[ 7] [ 12] [ 13] [ 14] He also wrestled forBig Japan Pro Wrestling (BJW) in Japan andCombat Zone Wrestling (CZW),Evolve , andPro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG) in the United States.[ 15] [ 16] [ 17] [ 18] [ 19] [ 20] [ 21] [ 22] He held numerous championships and is a formerwXw Unified World Heavyweight Champion ,wXw World Light Heavyweight Champion ,wXw World Tag Team Champion ,ICW Tag Team Champion , andProgress Tag Team Champion .[ 23] He challengedDrew Galloway for theICW World Heavyweight Championship ,[ 24] Bad Bones for the UEWAEuropean Heavyweight Championship ,[ 25] Davey Richards for theROH World Championship [ 26] andMarty Scurll for theProgress World Championship .[ 27]
In June 2016, it was reported that Büdgen had signed withWWE ,[ 28] and he reported to theWWE Performance Center on 19 October.[ 6] On 7 January 2017, he debuted the new ring name,Aleister Black .[ 29] On 15 January, he made a surprise appearance as Tommy End at theUnited Kingdom Championship Tournament finals, losing toNeville in a non-tournament match.[ 30]
Vignettes began to air from the 8 March episode ofNXT , promoting Black's television debut.[ 31] Black made his televised in-ring debut atNXT TakeOver: Orlando on 1 April, defeatingAndrade "Cien" Almas .[ 32] Black wrestled on the following Takeover events, defeating Hideo Itami atNXT TakeOver: Brooklyn III ,[ 33] Velveteen Dream , atNXT TakeOver: WarGames ,[ 34] [ 35] and Adam Cole in anExtreme Rules match at NXT TakeOver: Philadelphia.[ 36]
Black performing his in-ring pose in May 2017 Black won the NXT Championship from Andrade "Cien" Almas atNXT TakeOver: New Orleans on 7 April.[ 37] While he retained the belt againstLars Sullivan , atNXT TakeOver: Chicago II ,[ 38] Black lost the title on 25 July episode ofNXT toTommaso Ciampa , ending his reign at 108 days.[ 39]
While he was booked to wrestle Ciampa and Johnny Gargano atNXT TakeOver: Brooklyn 4 , he was removed from television that same day.[ 40] After being out of action for two months, Black returned on 17 October episode ofNXT , confrontingNikki Cross , who revealed that Johnny Gargano was the one who had attacked him.[ 41] A match between Black and Gargano was scheduled forNXT TakeOver: WarGames , in which Black was victorious.[ 42] AtNXT TakeOver: Phoenix on 26 January 2019, Black failed to regain the NXT Championship from Tommaso Ciampa.[ 43] The next night at theRoyal Rumble , he entered theRoyal Rumble match at number 21, but was eliminated byBaron Corbin .[ 44] In March, Black formed a tag team withRicochet and the two won the2019 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic .[ 45] AtNXT TakeOver: New York on 5 April, Black and Ricochet unsuccessfully facedThe War Raiders for theNXT Tag Team Championship in what would be Black's final NXT appearance.[ 46]
Main roster (2019–2021)[ edit ] On 18 February 2019, Black made his officialRaw debut, defeatingElias .[ 47] Black also continued his team with Ricochet, and the duo competed in aRaw Tag Team Championship match atFastlane that featuredBobby Roode andChad Gable , andThe Revival (Dash Wilder andScott Dawson ), but failed to win.[ 48] Black and Ricochet also competed for theSmackDown Tag Team Championship in a fatal four-way match the following month atWrestleMania 35 , but were again unsuccessful.[ 49] [ 50]
As part of theSuperstar Shake-up on 15 April, Black was drafted to theRaw brand ,[ 51] however on 22 April Black was drafted to theSmackDown brand due to his real-life wifeZelina Vega being drafted there, therefore splitting him from Ricochet.[ 52] Black then began appearing in ominous backstage promos in a dark room, awaiting a challenger.[ 53] On 9 July episode ofSmackDown , his challenge was eventually accepted,[ 53] with the mystery opponent to be revealed asCesaro .[ 54] Their match would take place atExtreme Rules on 14 July, as Black's first singles pay-per-view match since joining the main roster, where Black defeated Cesaro.[ 55]
As part of the2019 Draft in October, Black was drafted to the Raw brand.[ 56] Over the following weeks, Black would develop a winning streak, squashing his opponents.[ 57] On 18 November episode ofRaw ,Buddy Murphy went to Black's locker room to challenge him, but Black was absent and Murphy claimed that Black was all talk and no fight.[ 58] The following week, Black appeared and attacked Murphy after his match.[ 59] A match between Black and Murphy was scheduled forTLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs ,[ 60] which Black won.[ 61] At theRoyal Rumble pay-per-view on 26 January 2020, Black entered the Royal Rumble match at number 28, but was eliminated bySeth Rollins .[ 62]
On 24 February episode ofRaw , Black was attacked byThe O.C. (AJ Styles ,Luke Gallows , andKarl Anderson ) backstage.[ 63] The next week onRaw , Black faced The O.C. members in separate matches, and suffered his first pinfall loss on the main roster, to AJ Styles.[ 64] AtElimination Chamber on 8 March, Black defeated Styles in a no disqualification match, with interference fromThe Undertaker .[ 65] AtWrestleMania 36 , on night two of the event, Black defeatedBobby Lashley after an accidental distraction by Lashley's manager andin-storyline wifeLana .[ 66] [ 67] On 20 April episode ofRaw , Black defeatedAustin Theory to qualify for theMoney in the Bank ladder match atMoney in the Bank .[ 68] At the event,COVID-19 pandemic restraints forced the match to be changed to acinematic match with a "Corporate Ladder" gimmick in which the titular briefcase was suspended above a ring on the roof of WWE's headquarters, with the competitors starting on the ground floor and fighting their way to the roof. Black failed to win the match, which was also notable for a sequence where Black andRey Mysterio were thrown off the roof byBaron Corbin .[ 69] [ 70]
Following this, Black began a feud with Seth Rollins and Murphy after Rollins injured Rey Mysterio's eye.[ 71] [ 72] On 27 July episode ofRaw , Murphy injured Black's right eye by driving it through the steel steps.[ 73] On the 24 August episode ofRaw , Black, now wearing an eye bandage, returned duringThe Kevin Owens Show and attackedKevin Owens , turningheel for the first time in his career.[ 74] [ 75] The following week on Raw he attacked Owens again with his Black Mass finishing move before a match againstRandy Orton which Owens lost. On the 14 September episode ofRaw , Owens defeated Black. Owens would go on again to defeat Black, via disqualification, on the 28 September episode ofRaw . On the 12 October episode ofRaw , Black would lose again to Owens in a No Disqualification match, ending the feud. As part of the2020 Draft in October, Black was drafted to the SmackDown brand.[ 3] [ 76] However, following the draft, Black would disappear from television for six months. After his absence, he returned on the 23 April 2021 episode ofSmackDown in a vignette promoting his return. After several weeks of vignettes, Black officially returned on the 21 May episode ofSmackDown , attackingBig E with theBlack Mass which allowed Apollo Crews to retain theIntercontinental Championship in the main event, in what would be his final appearance with WWE in his first stint. Black was originally planned to feud with Big E as a result, but it never came to fruition as Black was released from the company on June 2.[ 77]
All Elite Wrestling (2021–2025)[ edit ] Black at the2022 Forbidden Door On the 7 July 2021 episode ofAEW Dynamite , entitledRoad Rager , Büdgen made his debut forAll Elite Wrestling (AEW) under the ring nameMalakai Black , attacking bothArn Anderson andCody Rhodes with the Black Mass, confirming his status as a heel.[ 78] During the specialHomecoming episode ofDynamite on 4 August, Black made his in-ring AEW debut defeating Rhodes. After the match, Black attacked Rhodes once again, laying him out after hitting him in the back with a crutch.[ 79] Black would face Rhodes in a rematch atGrand Slam on 22 September, defeating him once again.[ 80] On the 23 October episode ofDynamite , Black suffered his loss in AEW at the hands of Rhodes.[ 81] On 14 November atFull Gear , Black teamed withAndrade El Idolo in a losing effort to Rhodes andPac .[ 82]
House of Black (Black,Brody King , andBuddy Matthews ) menacingWheeler Yuta (bottom) at the2024 All In .In early 2022, Black began feuding with the Varsity Blonds (Brian Pillman Jr. andGriff Garrison ) and the Death Triangle (Pac andPenta El Zero Miedo ). On the 12 January 2022 edition ofDynamite ,Brody King debuted and joined Black, forming a tag team called the Kings of the Black Throne which later expanded into a larger faction called theHouse of Black .[ 83] On the 23 February edition ofDynamite ,Buddy Matthews made his debut as the third House of Black member.[ 84] AtRevolution 'sbuy-in show, the House of Black would win in a trios match against the team of the Death Triangle andErick Redbeard , with Black pinning Redbeard for the victory.[ 85] [ 86] AtDouble or Nothing ,Julia Hart would join the group after helping them beat the Death Triangle (Pac, Penta Oscuro andRey Fenix ) in a six-man tag team match. AtForbidden Door , Black competed in afour-way match to determine the inauguralAEW All-Atlantic Champion , but failed to win.
AtRevolution on 5 March 2023, the House of Black defeatedThe Elite (Kenny Omega ,Matt Jackson , andNick Jackson ) to become theAEW World Trios Championship .[ 87] On 27 August 2023, atAll In , the House of Black lost the titles toThe Acclaimed andBilly Gunn in a "House Rules"No Holds Barred match.[ 88]
AtDouble or Nothing on 26 May 2024, Black unsuccessfully challengedAdam Copeland for theAEW TNT Championship in abarbed wire steel cage match .[ 89] On the 15 June episode ofAEW Collision , the House of Black won a #1 contenders' match forThe Patriarchy 's AEW World Trios Championships. After the match, Patriarchy leaderChristian Cage appeared on the titantron and revealed that they had attacked Matthews with a con-chair-to, turning the entire House of Black stable face for the first time.[ 90] On 25 August atAll In , the House of Black participated in theladder match for the AEW World Trios Championships, but failed to win.[ 91] On 23 November atFull Gear , Kings of the Black Throne participated in afour-way tag team match for theAEW World Tag Team Championships , but failed to win in what would be his final match in AEW.[ 92] On 10 February 2025, it was reported that Black's contract with AEW had expired and he would be departing the company.[ 93]
Return to WWE (2025–present)[ edit ] On 25 April 2025 episode ofSmackDown , after weeks of vignettes teasing his return, Büdgen, reverting back to hisAleister Black name, made his return to WWE, hittingThe Miz with aBlack Mass , becoming an official member of theSmackDown roster.[ 94] The following week onSmackDown , Black defeated The Miz in his in-ring return.[ 95] Black then began a feud withDamian Priest , defeating him in aLast Man Standing match on 10 October episode ofSmackDown with the help of his real-life wifeZelina Vega .[ 96]

On 23 November 2018, Büdgen married Puerto Rican-American professional wrestler Thea Trinidad, better known by the ring nameZelina Vega .[ 100] Despite being anatheist , he is interested inreligious studies , particularly surroundingthe occult .[ 101]
