Maionia orMaeonia (Greek:Μαιονία), was a city of theHellenistic,Roman andByzantine era located near theHermos River,[1] inancient Lydia. Both Ramsay and Talbert[2] tentatively identified the ancient polis with the modern village ofKoula (Turkish forfortress) a village known for itscarpet manufacture.[3]
The town is mentioned byPliny the Elder,[4]Hierocles,[5] and in theNotitiae Episcopatuum. Several coins from Maionia exist. In antiquity the city was part of theKatakekaumeneDecapolis of towns. Once the seat of a residential bishop, it remains atitular see of theRoman Catholic Church.[6]
Its site is located nearMenye inAsiatic Turkey.[7][8]
