State Route 17 (abbreviatedSR 17) is part ofMaine's system ofnumbered state highways, located in the south central part of the state. It is a major regional route running for 131.21 miles (211.16 km) from an intersection withState Route 4 inOquossoc to an intersection withU.S. Route 1 andU.S. Route 1A inRockland.
SR 17 travels through parts ofFranklin,Oxford,Androscoggin,Kennebec,Lincoln andKnox counties.
SR 17 begins inFranklin County at a T-intersection withSR 4 (Carry Road) inOquossoc village (part ofRangeley town.)
From there it heads south along the western shore ofRangeley Lake, passing South Shore Drive on the east, and continues on throughRangeley Plantation.It then entersOxford County atByron, and continues south throughRoxbury and intoMexico where it intersectsUS 2.
It then runs westerly concurrent withUS 2 throughMexico andDixfield 16.79 miles (27.02 km) until it leavesUS 2 near the border ofOxford County and re-entersFranklin County, where it runs westerly until it connects withSR 4 inJay.
It then runs southerly concurrent withSR 4 throughJay and intoAndroscoggin County atLivermore Falls where it switches to run concurrent withSR 133 for a short way before leaving SR 133 and heading east intoKennebec County through the town ofFayette and into the town ofReadfield where it concurs withSR 41 for 2.37 miles (3.81 km.)
It then leaves SR 41 and continues southeasterly intoManchester where it concurs withUS 202,SR 11 andSR 100 intoAugusta, passing overInterstate 95 and on into Augusta center, then concurrently with several other major routes (US 201 andUS 202) over the bridge at Augusta on theKennebec River. Once over the river it then turns south leaving all other routes except concurrent withSR 9 for a short distance before turning east and continuing intoWindsor where it concurs withSR 32. It then continues southeasterly intoLincoln County atWhitefield andJefferson where it leaves SR 32 and continues easterly throughSomerville enteringKnox County and intersecting first withSR 206 and thenSR 220 at Washington.
Continuing easterly throughUnion where it concurs withSR 131 for a short distance before concurring withSR 235 for 2.78 miles (4.47 km) and then continuing on throughRockport intersectingSR 90 there. And finally on into Rockland, where it terminates atUS 1 and 1A close to the waterfront port and theAtlantic Ocean.
