In 2006, 2001 and 1996, Mursalin Molla ofCPI(M) won the Maheshtala Assembly constituency defeating his nearest rivals Dulal Das ofINC in 2006,[5] Biman Banerjee ofAITC in 2001[6] and Gouranga Mukherjee ofINC in 1996.[7] Abul Basar ofCPI(M) defeated Malay Chowdhury ofINC in 1991[8] and Habibur Rahman ofINC in 1987.[9] Mir Abdus Sayeed ofCPI(M) defeated Dilip Ghose,Independent politician, in 1982.[10] Sudhir Chandra Bhandari ofCPI(M) defeated Mali Safiuddin ofJanata Party in 1977.[11][12]
