Mahendra Nath Pandey (born 15 October 1957) is an Indian politician who was Minister of Heavy Industries and Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship of India andMember of Lok Sabha forChandauli from2014 to2024. He is a member ofBharatiya Janata Party and was the president of the party's Uttar Pradesh unit. He was also UnionMinister of State forMinistry of Human Resource Development in 2016 and 2017. He was a member of Modi's second ministry. On 30 May 2019, he was appointed as Cabinet minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of India.

Pandey was born atPakhanpur,Uttar Pradesh to Sudhakar Pandey and Chandrawati Pandey in aBrahmin family.[1][2] He received apostgraduate degree inJournalism and completed hisPh.D inHindi fromBanaras Hindu University.[1] In 1973, he was elected president of the students' union ofC.M. Anglo Bengali College. Five years later, he became the general secretary of the students' union of Banaras Hindu University.[3]
Pandey spent five months in prison duringthe Emergency.[4][5] In 1978, he joinedRashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.[5] He took part in theRam Janmabhoomi movement and was booked under theNational Security Act by theMulayam Singh Yadav-led state government.[5]
In 1991, Pandey was elected to theUttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly for the first time.[3] In 1996, he was re-elected to the assembly. He received the portfolio of Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development the following year in theKalyan Singh ministry. He also served as Minister of State for Planning (Independent charge) between 1998 and 2000, and Minister of State, Panchayati Raj between 2000 and 2002.[6]
Ahead of the2014 Indian general election,Bharatiya Janata Party announced that Pandey would contest from theChandauli constituency ofPurvanchal.[7] He was elected to theLok Sabha after defeating his nearest rival Anil Maurya of theBahujan Samaj Party by a margin of approximately 150,000 votes.[3][5] Subsequently, he was made a member ofStanding Committee onRural Development and Consultative Committee forMinistry of Steel and Mines.[8]
On 5 July 2016, in a major cabinet reshuffle, Pandey took the oath of office as UnionMinister of State forHuman Resource Development in theFirst Modi ministry.[9][10] On 31 August 2017, he was replaced bySatyapal Singh.[11] That same day, he was appointed president of theUttar Pradesh unit of the BJP, replacingKeshav Prasad Maurya.[12]
In the Cabinet announcement made on 31 May 2019, Pandey was given the post of Minister of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship in the 17th Lok Sabha under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.[13][14]
Pandey's family originally hails from the village ofPakhanpur.[4] He married Pratima Pandey on 8 February 1985 and they have one daughter.[1]
