Mahafaly is a dialect of theMalagasy language[2][3] spoken by theMahafaly people in theAtsimo-Andrefana region of southwesternMadagascar.[4]
Mahafaly belongs to theAustronesian languages family under theMalayo-Polynesian languages branch, within theBarito languages group. It is classified as a Southern Malagasic dialect alongsideSouthern Sakalava,Tandroy,Vezo,Masikoro andKarimbola.[5]
Mahafaly is spoken by approximately 472,000 people in the arid southwest ofMadagascar, mainly in theAtsimo-Andrefana region.[6]
