Magoua (French pronunciation:[maɡwa]) is a particulardialect ofbasilectalQuebec French spoken in theTrois-Rivières area, between Trois-Rivières andMaskinongé. Long before a military fort was constructed there, Trois-Rivières became in 1615 the first stronghold of thecoureurs des bois outside the city ofQuébec.Magoua is theethnonym applied to their descendants in the area. Magoua is the most conservative of all Quebec French varieties, includingJoual. It preserves thesontaient ("étaient") characteristic ofMétis French andLouisiana French, has acreole-like past tense particletà and has old present-tense contraction of a former verb "to be" that behave in the same manner as subjectclitics.
Its name may derive from a word inAtikamekw:Makwa (French:huard), which meansloon (Gavia immer).
