Education

[edit]

Skipper obtained a bachelor's degree in genetics at theUniversity of Nottingham.[5][6] She completed her PhD in 1998 at theUniversity of Cambridge, where she worked inJonathan Hodgkin's lab investigatingsex-determination systems in the nematode wormCaenorhabditis elegans.[1][7] She is a member ofCorpus Christi College, Cambridge.[8]

Career and research

[edit]

After completing her PhD she joined theMedical Research Council (MRC)Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) at theUniversity of Cambridge.[9][7] She briefly worked as apostdoctoralfellow at theImperial Cancer Research Fund, working on thenotch signaling pathway ofzebrafish in gut development.[7][10]

Skipper joinedNature in 2001 as an associate editor forNature Reviews Genetics.[7] During her editorship she interviewed several high-profile scientists includingAnne McLaren,[11]Mario Capecchi[12] andOliver Smithies.[13] In 2002 she was appointed chief editor ofNature Reviews Genetics, and was promoted to associate publisher in 2008.[14][15] She serves on the advisory board of the Centre for Personalised Medicine at theUniversity of Oxford.[16] Skipper worked briefly as Director for Scientific Communications at the Altius Institute for Biomedical Sciences in Seattle.[5][8]

In 2018 she worked withNature andEstée Lauder Companies to launch a global award for women in science.[17][18] She became the first woman editor-in-chief ofNature in its 150-year history in May 2018, when she succeededPhilip Campbell.[19][20][21] She has stated that she intends to ensure that science isreproducible and robust, as well as doing more to support early-career researchers.[19]
