Madden is an upcoming Americanbiographicalsports film co-produced and directed byDavid O. Russell, who co-wrote it based on an earlier version by Cambron Clark. It follows the life ofAmerican football coach and commentatorJohn Madden, who is portrayed byNicolas Cage. The cast also featuresChristian Bale,Kathryn Hahn,John Mulaney,Sienna Miller, andShane Gillis.
Madden depicts the life ofJohn Madden and his involvement in development of theMadden NFLvideo game series.
It was announced in May 2023 thatWill Ferrell had entered early negotiations to star in the film asJohn Madden, withDavid O. Russell set to direct.[1]
However, in August,Nicolas Cage would be cast to play Madden.[2] In April 2025,Christian Bale was announced to portrayAl Davis, whileJohn Mulaney,Kathryn Hahn, andSienna Miller were reported to be in talks to join the cast.[3] In May,Shane Gillis joined the cast.[4]
Principal photography began on April 24, 2025, inAtlanta.[5] In May 2025, several actors and crew members on the set of the film allegedly walked off after Russell used the "n-word", and also tried to insert it in the film's dialogue, then "belittled" other cast and crew members over objections to his use of the word.[6]
Madden is scheduled to be released onAmazon Prime Video on November 26, 2026.[7]
