Macrothumia is agenus in the willow familySalicaceae with a singlespeciesMacrothumia kuhlmannii.[2] It is a tree native to the states ofBahia,Espírito Santo, andMinas Gerais inBrazil.[3][4] Formerly classified in the genusBanara in the familyFlacourtiaceae, phylogenetic analyses based on DNA data indicate that this species, along with its close relatives inAhernia,Hasseltia, andPleuranthodendron are better placed in a broadly circumscribed Salicaceae.[4][5][6]Macrothumia differs from its close relatives in having a congested fascicle- or umbel-likeinflorescence and a large (>3 cm diameter)fruit. The genus name is derived from theGreek word μακροθυμία, which means long-suffering and enduring patience.
