Michael Mackenzie Lowe McDonald (born April 16, 1995) is an American professionaltennis player. He has a career-high singlesranking of world No. 37, achieved on October 16, 2023 and a doubles ranking of No. 49, achieved on October 2, 2023.
McDonald won the2016 NCAA Division I Tennis Championships in bothsingles and doubles.[2][3]
McDonald was a semifinalist in theboys' singles of the2012 Australian Open.[4]In 2012, he reached a career high ranking in the ITF World Tour Junior Rankings of number 12 and won the 18s singles title at the 2012 Easter Bowl.[5] While still a junior, he won the men's singles title at the amateurOjai Tennis Tournament in 2013,[6] and also qualified for the2013 Cincinnati Masters at age 18 by defeating top 100 playersNicolas Mahut andSteve Johnson. However, he lost in the first round of the main draw to fellow qualifierDavid Goffin.
McDonald was listed as the No. 1 player coming into college according to theITA. As a freshman at UCLA, he was named a Singles All-American and thePac-12 Freshman of the Year. McDonald was also a quarterfinalist at the NCAA singles championship while compiling a 33–9 record during the season, including an 18–4 record in dual matches.
At the 2015NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship, he defeated top-ranked Axel Alvarez ofOklahoma during team competition. He played #1 singles and doubles for the UCLA Bruins for most of the season.
During the 2016 season, he helped hisBruins to the quarterfinals of the Division I Tennis Team Championship. Then on Memorial Day, May 30, McDonald defeated the No. 1 rankedMikael Torpegaard ofOhio State University for the singles championship at theMichael D. Case Tennis Center, inTulsa, Oklahoma. He became the 12th UCLA Bruins player to win the singles title. McDonald also teamed withMartin Redlicki to play for the doubles championship. They defeated the team ofArthur Rinderknech andJackson Withrow fromTexas A&M to win the doubles individual championship. In doing so, McDonald became the first college player to win both the national singles and doubles titles sinceMatías Boeker of theUniversity of Georgia in2001. After the NCAA tournament, on June 16, 2016, he announced that he would not return to UCLA for his senior year, but turn professional.[7]
At age 18, McDonald qualified for the2013 Western & Southern Open[4] by defeating two top 100 players despite never previously having earned an ATP point. He became the first unranked teenager to qualify for an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament sinceSergio Casal at the1995 Miami Masters. McDonald lost in the first round toDavid Goffin in straight sets.[8] He was subsequently given a wildcard entry into the2013 US Open qualifying.
McDonald qualified into the main draw of the 2014 Challenger in Winnetka, Illinois and defeated world no. 154Sam Groth.

McDonald was awarded a wildcard into the main draw of theUS Open, where he lost to Czech qualifierJan Šátral in five sets in the first round.[9] Beginning in late September and lasting through early October, McDonald had an impressive string of results in Challenger-level tournaments, winning his first ITF Pro Circuit title at USA F29 Irvine Futures, as well as reaching back-to-back semifinals in Tiburon and Stockton with impressive wins over three top-150 players.
McDonald began the season winning the singles title at the F1 Los Angeles Pro Futures held at theUniversity of Southern California, beatingCarl Söderlund in the final by winning the last eleven games.[10] In March at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, McDonald, along with former University of Virginia tennis playerDanielle Collins, were selected to receive the Oracle US Tennis Awards, given to exceptional collegiate players transitioning to a professional.[11] McDonald won the USA F12 Futures doubles event withLloyd Glasspool, his fifth career Futures doubles title.
He participated in his first Australian Open in January where he defeatedElias Ymer in the first round after winning the qualifiers. In the next round, he was defeated by 3rd rankedGrigor Dimitrov in a 5 set thriller.[12] Later, he won the Seoul Challenger againstJordan Thompson.[13]
At Wimbledon, he reached his first Grand Slam third-round by winning his first-ever 5-set match overNicolás Jarry in the round of 64.[14] He then proceeded to defeatGuido Pella in straight sets to reach the second week of a grand slam for the first time in his career.[15][16] He was then defeated in four sets byMilos Raonic in the round of 16.[17]
McDonald reached the final of the2019 Dallas Challenger in February, where he lost in three sets toMitchell Krueger, despite leading by a set and a break in the 2nd set.He also participated in the2019 Delray Beach Open in February, where he achieved his first top 10 win by defeatingJuan Martín del Potro in the quarterfinals to reach his first ATP level semifinal,[18] where he lost toRadu Albot.[19]His good form carried on into the ATP 500Acapulco tournament, where he reached the quarterfinals, eventually losing toCameron Norrie in two sets. These results helped propel him to a then career-high ranking of world No. 62 on March 4, 2019.
At the2019 French Open, McDonald suffered a serious hamstring injury in his first round doubles match, forcing him to miss the rest of the 2019 season.[20]
McDonald returned to the tour in January at theASB Classic in Auckland. He lost in the final round of qualifying toMikael Ymer. Using a protected ranking to enter the main draw at theAustralian Open, he was defeated in the first round by 30th seed and world No. 32,Dan Evans, despite having a two sets to love lead.[21]
After the early loss in Melbourne, McDonald competed at theOracle Challenger Series – Newport Beach. Seeded ninth, he lost in the second round to compatriotRaymond Sarmiento. Seeded eighth at theRBC Championships of Dallas, he reached the quarterfinals where he lost to third seedDominik Koepfer.[22]
At the2020 US Open, McDonald lost to 30th seedCasper Ruud from two sets up.[23]
At the2020 French Open, on his debut at this Major, McDonald earned his first victory at a Major since the2019 Australian Open. Under the supervision of his new coach Jaime Pulgar García, he defeated Canadian qualifierSteven Diez in four sets before losing to defending (and eventual) championRafael Nadal in the second round in straight sets.[24]
McDonald started his 2021 season at theDelray Beach Open. He lost in the first round to sixth seed, compatriot, and 2016 champion,Sam Querrey.[25] At theMurray River Open, he beat 14th seed,Richard Gasquet, in the first round.[26] He was defeated in the second round by AustralianAlex Bolt.[27] Ranked 192 at theAustralian Open, he upset 22nd seed and world No. 25,Borna Ćorić, in the second round.[28] He reached the 4th round of a Major for the second time where he was defeated by fourth seed and eventual finalist,Daniil Medvedev.[29]
After the Australian Open, McDonald played at theNur-Sultan Challenger. He won his 5th Challenger title by beatingJurij Rodionov in the final.[30] At theNur-Sultan Challenger II, he lost in the second round to eventual championTomáš Macháč.[31] At theOpen 13 Provence inMarseille, he was ousted from the tournament in the second round by third seed and world No. 21,Karen Khachanov.[32] Getting past qualifying at theMiami Open, he fell in the second round to 18th seed, world No. 28, compatriot, and 2018 champion,John Isner, in three sets.[33] Seeded third at theOrlando Open, he was defeated in the first round by compatriotChristian Harrison.[34]
McDonald started his clay-court season at theBMW Open in Munich, Germany. Getting past qualifying, he knocked out sixth seedDušan Lajović in the first round.[35] He lost in the second round to fellow qualifierIlya Ivashka.[36] Seeded third at theBiella Challenger V, he was defeated in the second round byLeonardo Mayer. Seeded eighth at theHeilbronner Neckarcup, he reached the semifinals where he lost toDaniel Elahi Galán.[37] InGeneva, he fell in the final round of qualifying to Ilya Ivashka. Getting past qualifying at theFrench Open, he lost in the second round to 22nd seed and world No. 23,Cristian Garín, in five sets, despite having two match points in the third-set tie-break.[38]
Seeded fifth at theNottingham Open, McDonald's first grass-court tournament of the season, he lost in the first round toEvgeny Donskoy. At theNottingham Trophy, he reached the semifinals where he was defeated by qualifierAlex Bolt, who would end up winning the tournament.[39] Getting past qualifying atWimbledon, he lost in the first round to 25th seed and world No. 29, Karen Khachanov, who would end up reaching the quarterfinals.
Seeded eighth at theLos Cabos Open, McDonald was eliminated in the first round by qualifier and compatriot,Ernesto Escobedo.[40]

McDonald began his US Open series at theAtlanta Open. He lost in the first round toEmil Ruusuvuori, who would end up reaching the semifinals.[41] Next, he competed at theCiti Open in Washington, D.C. He upset defending champion,Nick Kyrgios, in the first round.[42] He defeated compatriot,Denis Kudla, in the quarterfinals to reach his second Tour-level semifinal and first at theATP 500 level.[43] In the semifinals, he beat 2015 champion,Kei Nishikori, in three sets to reach his first ATP final.[44] He lost in the final to 5th seed and world No. 24,Jannik Sinner, in three sets.[45] As a result, he returned to the top 100 for the first time in 2 years, climbing more than 40 positions up in the rankings to world No. 64 on August 9, 2021. At theNational Bank Open in Toronto, he fell in his first-round match toBenoît Paire.[46] At theWestern & Southern Open in Cincinnati, he was defeated in the second round by top seed and world No. 2,Daniil Medvedev.[47] Ranked 61 at theUS Open, he upset 27th seed and world No. 30,David Goffin, in the first round.[48] He lost in the second round to 2014 finalist Kei Nishikori.[49]
In October, McDonald played at theIndian Wells Masters. He lost in the second round to top seed and world No. 2, Daniil Medvedev.[50] InMoscow, he was beaten in the second round byGilles Simon.[51] At theSt. Petersburg Open, he lost in the second round to third seed and world No. 20,Roberto Bautista Agut.[52] At theParis Masters, he was defeated in the first round by Dušan Lajović.[53] McDonald competed in his final tournament of the season at theStockholm Open. He lost in the first round toAlejandro Davidovich Fokina in three sets.[54]
McDonald ended the year ranked 55.
McDonald started his 2022 season at the first edition of theMelbourne Summer Set 1. Seeded eighth, he lost in the second round toBotic van de Zandschulp.[55] At theAdelaide International 2, he was defeated in the first round by eventual finalist,Arthur Rinderknech, in three sets.[56] At theAustralian Open, he lost in the second round to 18th seed, world No. 15, and last year semifinalist,Aslan Karatsev, in four sets.[57]
After the Australian Open, McDonald competed at theOpen Sud de France. He was eliminated in the second round by top seed, world No. 3, and eventual finalist,Alexander Zverev.[58] InRotterdam, he beat eighth seed and world No. 21,Nikoloz Basilashvili, in the first round.[59] He was beaten in the second round byAlex de Minaur in three sets.[60] He made his top 50 debut on February 7, 2022 at world No. 49. McDonald started his grass-court season at theLibéma Open. He lost in the first round to Ilya Ivashka. At theHalle Open, he was defeated in the second round by fourth seed and world No. 9,Félix Auger-Aliassime.[72] At theMallorca Championships, he lost in the second round toMarcos Giron.[73] AtWimbledon, he was eliminated from the tournament in the second round byRichard Gasquet.[74]
McDonald started his US Open series at theAtlanta Open. He lost in the second round to sixth seed, compatriot, and eventual finalist,Jenson Brooksby.[75] Last year finalist at theCiti Open, he was defeated in the first round byEmil Ruusuvuori.[76] At theNational Bank Open in Montreal, he lost in the first round toAlex Molčan.[77] InCincinnati, he lost his second-round match to third seed Carlos Alcaraz.[78] At theUS Open, he lost in the first round to João Sousa in four sets.[79]
At the2022 Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships, he won his maiden doubles title partneringMarcelo Melo after defeating third seedsRafael Matos andDavid Vega Hernández.[80] As a result he reached the top 100 at a new career-high doubles ranking of No. 96 on 10 October 2022.
McDonald ended the year ranked 63.
McDonald started his 2023 season inAdelaide. Atthe first tournament, he lost in the second round toYoshihito Nishioka.[81] Indoubles, he and his partner,Marcelo Melo, upset top seedsWesley Koolhof andNeal Skupski in the second round.[82] They reached the semifinals where they lost toLloyd Glasspool andHarri Heliövaara, who ended up winning the tournament.[83] At thesecond tournament, he ousted fifth seed,Dan Evans, in the first round.[84] He was defeated in the second round by qualifierMikael Ymer.[85] At theAustralian Open, he won his first round match in five sets over compatriotBrandon Nakashima.[86] In the second round, he defeated the injuredRafael Nadal.[87][88] He lost in the third round to 31st seed Yoshihito Nishioka.[89]
After the Australian Open, McDonald represented the USA in theDavis Cup tie against Uzbekistan. Making his debut, he played one match and beatSergey Fomin.[90] The USA won the tie over Uzbekistan 4-0 to reach the Davis Cup Finals.[91] At theDallas Open, he lost in the second round to second seed, world No. 14, and compatriot,Frances Tiafoe.[92] InDelray Beach, he beat fifth seed, Yoshihito Nishioka, in the second round.[93] In the quarterfinals, he defeated compatriotMichael Mmoh.[94] He lost his semifinal match to top seed, world No. 7, compatriot and eventual championTaylor Fritz.[95] At theMexican Open, he reached the quarterfinals where he lost to seventh seed, world No. 23, compatriot and eventual finalistTommy Paul.[96] Indoubles, he and his partner, compatriotBen Shelton, upset fourth seedsJuan Sebastián Cabal andRobert Farah in the first round.[97] They lost in the quarterfinals toAndré Göransson andBen McLachlan.[98] At theIndian Wells Masters, he was defeated in the second round by seventh seed and world No. 8,Holger Rune.[99] At theMiami Open, he beat 19th seed and world No. 23,Matteo Berrettini, in the second round.[100] He was beaten in the third round byQuentin Halys.[101]

At the2023 National Bank Open he reached his first Masters 1000 quarterfinal upsetting sixth seedAndrey Rublev[118][119] and wildcardMilos Raonic before losing toAlejandro Davidovich Fokina.[120] As a result he reached a new career-high ranking in the top 40 of world No. 39 on 21 August 2023.He received a wildcard for the next Asian swing tournament, the2023 China Open in Beijing where he lost toGrigor Dimitrov. He recorded his 100th career win at the2023 Rolex Paris Masters over compatriotJ. J. Wolf.
