Mac. Robertson Land is the portion ofAntarctica lying southward of thecoast betweenWilliam Scoresby Bay andCape Darnley. It is located at70°00′S65°00′E / 70.000°S 65.000°E /-70.000; 65.000. In theeast, Mac. Robertson Land includes thePrince Charles Mountains. It was named by theBritish Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE) (1929–1931), under SirDouglas Mawson, after SirMacpherson Robertson ofMelbourne, apatron of the expedition.[1]
From 1965 onward, members of the SAE (Soviet Antarctic Expeditions) began undertakinggeological fieldwork in thePrince Charles Mountains, eventually establishing a base,Soyuz Station, on the eastern shore ofBeaver Lake in the northern Prince Charles Mountains.
Mac.Robertson Land (no space afterMac.)[2] is the official Australian name, but it is known in the United States asMac. Robertson Land and in Russia asMacRobertson Land.[3]

As well as typical Antarctic geography, Mac. Robertson Land contains significant geographical features such asTschuffert Peak,Poulton Peak, andPeak Seven;Cape Rouse,Tilley Bay, andFrustration Dome. Two of the most important of Mac. Robertson Land's landmarks areSoyuz Station, located in thePrince Charles Mountains, and theAmery Ice Shelf.
The Australian polar stationMawson has been operating here since 1954.
