Maason Smith (born October 13, 2002) is an American professionalfootballdefensive tackle for theJacksonville Jaguars of theNational Football League (NFL). He playedcollege football for theLSU Tigers.

Early life

Smith attendedTerrebonne High School inHouma, Louisiana. Smith was one of the top rated recruits in the2021 class, recording more than 40 tackles and nine sacks in his senior season.[1] As a result, Smith would be named to theAll-American Bowl roster.[2] Rated as the highest recruit in Louisiana, Smith decided to stay in state and playcollege football atLouisiana State University over offers fromMiami,Georgia, andAlabama.[3]

College career

At LSU, Smith became the first player to wear the number zero in school history.[4] In his freshman year, Smith would tally 19 tackles, four sacks, and five tackles for loss.[5] Three of Smith's sacks would come againstMcNeese State.[6] Smith would suffer a leg injury and miss the rest of the season. Smith was named to theAll-SEC Freshman Team and theFreshman All-America Team.[7][8] To open the2022 season,LSU playedFlorida State in the Louisiana Kickoff. During the game, while celebrating a play, Smithtore his ACL prematurely ending his season.[9][10] He returned the following season, totaling 27 tackles and four and a half sacks, before declaring for the2024 NFL draft.[11]
