TheKatarina is afloating restaurant, and formersteam ship, that was built in 1869 atStockholm in Sweden. Sailing under her original name ofFredriksborg on the route through theStockholm archipelago from Stockholm toVaxholm, she was theWaxholmsbolaget's first propeller-driven steam ship. After being sold by the Waxholmsbolaget in 1882, she operated in various roles under the namesHöganäs,Mariehamn,Stella,Wirumaa,Kullervo andAndré before acquiring her current name in 1985. Today she is a floating restaurant moored in theAura river inTurku, Finland.[1]
TheFredriksborg was built in 1869 byWilliam Lindberg's Shipyard [sv], onSödermalm inStockholm, for the recently founded Waxholms Ångfartygs AB, better known as theWaxholmsbolaget. She was that company's first propeller-driven steam ship, operating between Stockholm andVaxholm. In 1882, she was sold to Ångfartygs AB Skånska Kusten ofMalmö, who renamed herHöganäs. Whilst in Malmö, she operated a route fromSkanör toMölle via Malmö,Barsebäck,Landskrona,Helsingborg andViken.[2][3]
In 1886, theHöganäs was sold to Leon Gestrin ofTurku in Finland, who renamed herMariehamn and used her on services from Turku toMariehamn inÅland. In 1890, she was sold to Carl Georg Rosenberg, also of Turku, who renamed herStella but continued to operate her between Turku and Mariehamn. In 1912, she was sold to the Reval Shipping Company ofTallinn in Estonia, who renamed herWirumaa and ran her on services between Tallinn andRiga in Latvia.[3]
In 1916, theWirumaa was sold to a group of individual owners in theKoivisto Islands, then part of Finland, and renamedKullervo. Over the following years she had a number of owners, being renamedAndré in 1922. In 1926 she was converted to abarge, and in 1956 converted again to a motor cargo vessel. In 1972 she was converted to a cruise ship, and in 1985 she was renamedKatarina.[3]
