Lynn Douglas Hoyem (June 27, 1939 – February 17, 1973) was an American professionalfootballoffensive lineman in theNational Football League (NFL) for theDallas Cowboys andPhiladelphia Eagles. He wasdrafted in the 19th round of the1961 NFL draft and in the 29th round of the1962 AFL draft. He playedcollege football atLong Beach State University.
Hoyem attendedRedondo Union High School, where he played as aquarterback.[1] He accepted a football scholarship fromLong Beach State University. He was switched tocenter and became a three-year starter. He also played atlinebacker.
In 1987, he was inducted into the Long Beach State University Athletic Hall of Fame.[2] The athletics department created the Lynn Hoyem Leadership Award in his honor.[3]
Hoyem was selected by theDallas Cowboys in the 19th round (254th overall) of the1961 NFL draft with a future draft pick, which allowed the team to draft him before his college eligibility was over; becoming the first player from his school to be drafted into theNFL. He was also selected by theDenver Broncos in the 29th round (226th overall) of the1962 AFL draft.
On November 25,1961, he signed with the Cowboys. He was a backupcenter andguard, that played mainly onspecial teams. In1963, he started six games atleft guard.
On March 20,1964, he was traded to thePhiladelphia Eagles along withSam Baker anddefensive tackleJohn Meyers, in exchange forwide receiverTommy McDonald.[4]
In1964, he started eight games atright guard after passingPete Case on the depth chart. Hoyem played for four seasons with thePhiladelphia Eagles mostly in a reserve role on theoffensive line.[5] He announced his retirement on July 24,1968.
After hisfootball career, he became a pilot forNorthwest Airlines.[6] On February 17, 1973, he died in a private plane crash.[7]
