Lumberton is a city inLamar andPearl River counties,Mississippi, United States. It is part of theHattiesburg, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the2020 census, Lumberton had a population of 1,617.[2]

History

The city was named for the local lumber industry.[3]

Geography

Lumberton is located at31°0′14″N89°27′13″W / 31.00389°N 89.45361°W /31.00389; -89.45361 (31.003888, -89.453544).[4] Most of the city is inLamar County, with a small portion extending east into adjacentPearl River County.[5] In the 2000 census, 2,200 of the city's 2,228 residents (98.7%) lived in Lamar County and 28 (1.3%) in Pearl River County.[6]

According to theUnited States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.3 square miles (18.9 km2), of which 7.3 square miles (18.8 km2) is land and 0.04 square mile (0.1 km2) (0.27%) is water.

As of the2020 United States census, there were 1,617 people, 725 households, and 435 families residing in the city.

Government

In 2025, Democrat James H. Sandifer defeated incumbent mayor Quincy Rogers with over 80% of the vote.[9][10]

Education

The City of Lumberton is served by theLamar County School District.[11] TheLumberton Public School District consolidated into it as of 2019.[12][13]

Lumberton includes Lumberton Elementary School, Lumberton Middle School andLumberton High School.[14]
