Lukas Van Ness (born July 6, 2001) is an American professionalfootballdefensive tackle for theGreen Bay Packers of theNational Football League (NFL). He playedcollege football for theIowa Hawkeyes and was selected by the Packers in the first round of the2023 NFL draft.

Early life

Van Ness was born on July 6, 2001, inBarrington, Illinois. He later attendedBarrington High School, where he playedfootball and ice hockey.[1][2] He was rated a three-star recruit and committed to playcollege football at Iowa over offers from Illinois, Minnesota, and Kansas.[3]

College career

Van Ness redshirted his true freshman season at theUniversity of Iowa.[4] Playing bothdefensive end anddefensive tackle, he became a starter as a redshirt freshman and had 33 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, and seven sacks.[5] At the end of the season, Van Ness was named a FreshmanAll-American by theFootball Writers Association of America.[6] During his redshirt sophomore season, he was named theBig Ten Conference Special Teams Player of the Week after blocking two kicks in a 10–7 loss to Iowa State.[7][8]

Van Ness was selected by theGreen Bay Packers in the first round (13th overall) of the2023 NFL draft. The Packers initially held the 15th selection in the draft before trading up two spots with theNew York Jets to move up to 13th.[11][12] He signed his rookie contract on June 27, 2023.[13]

He saw his first NFL action on September 10, 2023, against theChicago Bears, recording his first career sack onJustin Fields during a 38–20 win.[14] His second sack came in a week 13, 27–19 victory over theKansas City Chiefs.[15]
