Ludwigsstadt is atown in thedistrict of Kronach, in theUpper Franconian region ofBavaria,Germany.

Geography

[edit]

It is situated in the valley of theLoquitz River, a tributary of theSaale, in theThuringian-Franconian Highlands of theThuringian Slate Mountains and theFranconian Forest mountain ranges. Located 28 kilometres (17 mi) north ofKronach, the Bavarian border with the state ofThuringia runs about 3 km (1.9 mi) north of the town centre, with ThuringianSaalfeld in a distance of c. 18 km (11 mi) down the Loquitz. Ludwigsstadt is the only municipality of the State of Bavaria located north of theRennsteig ridge.

It is the second-northernmost town in Bavaria, behindFladungen.

History

[edit]
Lauenstein Castle

The settlement in the Landgraviate of Thuringia was first mentioned in a 1269 deed asLudwichsdorf, probably named after a localVogt official of the Counts ofWeimar-Orlamünde. In 1427 the area around historic Lauenstein Castle was acquired by theHohenzollern ElectorFrederick I of Brandenburg, who added it as a northern exclave to his FranconianPrincipality of Kulmbach. Ludwigsstadt receivedtown privileges in 1490, which it again lost in 1525, as the citizens joined a rebellion against the landlords during theGerman Peasants' War.

In 1622 MargraveChristian of Brandenburg-Bayreuth, colonel of the ImperialFranconian Circle, finally purchased Ludwigsstadt. When his descendant MargraveCharles Alexander resigned in 1791, he sold his possessions to his Hohenzollern relatives in theKingdom of Prussia. In the course of theGerman Mediatisation in 1803, Ludwigsstadt fell to theElectorate of Bavaria.

Transport

[edit]

In 1885 Ludwigsstadt achieved access to theFranconian Forest Railway line, connecting the BavarianLudwig South-North Railway nearLichtenfels with the ThuringianSaal Railway atSaalfeld. It soon evolved to one of the most important north–south railway connections in Germany, linking the Prussian capitalBerlin withNuremberg andMunich.

Between 1945 and 1990 Ludwigsstadt station served as West German checkpoint forcrossing the inner German border by rail with its counterpart atProbstzella station. The border crossing was open for trains travelling fromWest toEast Germany orWest Berlin. The traffic was subject to theinterzonal traffic regulations, that regarding trains between West Germany and West Berlin followed the special regulations of theTransit Agreement (1972).

AfterGerman Reunification, the railway was restored and since 2000 is part of theIntercity Express (ICE) network with hourly trains linking Berlin and Munich. As the winding line however does not allow fast travelling, it is to be replaced by theNuremberg–Erfurt high-speed railway.
