Luca Lanotte (born 30 July 1985) is an Italian formerice dancer. With partnerAnna Cappellini, he is the2014 World champion, the2014 European champion, the2015 Cup of China champion and a thirteen-time medalist on theGrand Prix series, and a seven-timeItalian national champion (2012–18).
Luca Lanotte was born on 30 July 1985 inMilan, Italy.[1] His sister, Ada, competed insynchronized skating.[2] In 2008, he became a member of thePolizia Penitenziaria's sports group, the Fiamme Azzurre.[3] He is married to British-French ice dancer Eve Bentley.[3][4][5]
Luca Lanotte started skating at the age of seven and switched from singles to ice dance when he was ten.[6] He skated with Adriana Jovino, Camilla Spelta,[7] andCamilla Pistorello,[8] placing ninth at Junior Worlds with Pistorello.[6]
Lanotte was partnered withAnna Cappellini in May 2005 by the Italian skating federation.[9][10] Following a strong season together on the junior circuit, Cappellini/Lanotte made their senior debut in 2006–07. They finished 8th at their firstEuropeans. Before their next event,Worlds, Cappellini suffered a torn labrum in her left shoulder.[6] In the free dance at Worlds, they fell during a lift and finished 13th.[6]
In 2007–08, Cappellini/Lanotte won their first Grand Prix medal, a silver atSkate Canada, moved up to seventh atEuropeans, and finished in the top ten atWorlds.
In 2008–09, Cappellini/Lanotte did not medal in either of their Grand Prix appearances, but moved up to 5th atEuropeans and were again tenth atWorlds. In the off-season, they decided to change coaches, and moved toLyon,France, to train withMuriel Boucher-Zazoui andRomain Haguenauer.
Cappellini/Lanotte had a strong start in 2009–10, winning silver medals at theCup of Russia andSkate America and qualifying for their firstGrand Prix Final, where they finished fifth. They then placed sixth at theEuropean Championships, and finished outside the top ten at their firstOlympics. They then finished 11th at the2010 World Championships; in the free dance, the two collided during the twizzle sequence, causing Cappellini to fall, and received low levels on several elements.[11]
Cappellini/Lanotte began the 2010–11 season at theNebelhorn Trophy. They were first in the short dance and fourth in the free dance, finishing in second place overall.[12] They then placed fifth at the2010 NHK Trophy, after which they decided to leave coachMuriel Zazoui and move back to Milan to train with Paola Mezzadri.[13] They withdrew from2010 Skate America in order to prepare a new free dance. Cappelini/Lanotte later missed Italian nationals and theEuropean Championships because Lanotte had a knee injury. In 2011, they began splitting their time between Milan andNikolai Morozov inNovogorsk, Russia. They returned to competition at the Mont Blanc Trophy, which they won. They finished 8th at the2011 World Championships.
Cappellini/Lanotte won bronze medals at2011 Skate Canada International and the2011 Trophee Eric Bompard. After winning their first national title, they came in sixth at the2012 World Championships.
In June 2012, Cappellini/Lanotte began training withIgor Shpilband inNovi, Michigan.[14][15] Paola Mezzadri inMilan remained their primary coach, while Novi became their second training base.[14][16] Cappellini sprained her left shoulder during the summer.[17] In July, they decided to change their planned free dance.[18]
Cappellini/Lanotte began the2012–13 season with silver at the2012 Finlandia Trophy.[17] Winning silver at both of their Grand Prix events, the2012 Skate Canada and the2012 Trophée Eric Bompard, they qualified for their secondGrand Prix Final,[19] where they came in fourth. Cappellini/Lanotte won their first European medal, bronze, at the2013 European Championships. They then placed fourth at the2013 World Championships inLondon, Ontario.
In the 2013–14 season, Cappellini/Lanotte were awarded another pair of silver medals on the Grand Prix series. They placed sixth at the Grand Prix Final before winning gold at the2014 European Championships inBudapest. The duo finished sixth at the2014 Winter Olympics inSochi. Cappellini/Lanotte ended their season at the2014 World Championships inSaitama, Japan. Ranked first in the short dance and fourth in the free dance, they ended the competition in first overall, 0.02 of a point ahead of Canada'sKaitlyn Weaver /Andrew Poje and 0.06 ahead of France'sNathalie Pechalat /Fabian Bourzat. They became the second Italian ice dancers to win the World title.
In July 2014, Cappellini/Lanotte began working withMarina Zueva inCanton, Michigan, in addition to Mezzadri in Milan.[20] For the 2014-15 Grand Prix season, they were assigned toCup of China andTrophée Éric Bompard.[21] They withdrew from Trophée Bompard to make changes to their programs.[22][23] The team took silver at the2015 European Championships inStockholm, behind France'sGabriella Papadakis /Guillaume Cizeron. They capped off their season with a fourth-place finish at the2015 World Championships inShanghai.
Cappellini/Lanotte began the 2015–16 season by winning theLombardia Trophy. They won their first Grand Prix gold at the2015 Cup of China, followed by a silver at2015 Rostelecom Cup.[24] They qualified for theGrand Prix Final where they won the bronze medal behind AmericansMadison Chock /Evan Bates.
Cappellini/Lanotte won silver at the2016 European Championships inBratislava, Slovakia, finishing second to Papadakis/Cizeron. At the2016 World Championships inBoston, they placed sixth in the short dance, fourth in the free, and fourth overall.
Cappellini/Lanotte began their 2016-17 season by winning theCS Nebelhorn Trophy. Their Grand Prix assignments wereSkate Canada and theNHK Trophy. They finished fourth at Skate Canada and won the bronze medal at NHK behind Papadakis/Cizeron.
Cappellini/Lanotte won the silver medal at the2017 European Championships behind Papadakis/Cizeron. They went on to win theBavarian Open before finishing sixth at the2017 World Championships to finish their season.
To begin their 2017-18 season, Cappellini/Lanotte won gold at the2017 CS Minsk-Arena Ice Star. For their Grand Prix series, they were assigned theNHK Trophy andSkate America. Cappellini/Lanotte won bronze at NHK behind AmericansMadison Hubbell /Zachary Donahue. They went on to win silver at Skate America behind AmericansMaia Shibutani /Alex Shibutani. They qualified for theGrand Prix Final where they finished in sixth place.
At the2018 European Championships, Cappellini/Lanotte finished fourth overall after winning bronze in the short dance and placing fifth in the free dance.
At the2018 Winter Olympics, Cappellini/Lanotte competed in the team event where Team Italy finished fourth behind Team USA. In the individual event, Cappellini/Lanotte placed fifth in the short dance and sixth in the free dance to give them a sixth place finish overall.
Cappellini/Lanotte closed their season with a fourth-place finish at the2018 World Championships.
Following his competitive career, Lanotte began working as a figure skating choreographer. He has choreographed programs for:
