Luc-Marie Chatel (French:[lykmaʁiʃatɛl]) (born 15 August 1964) is aFrench politician of theRepublicans (LR) who served asMinister of National Education in thegovernment ofPrime MinisterFrançois Fillon from June 2009 to May 2012.[1] In 2014, he served as the acting chair of theUnion for a Popular Movement (UMP).[2][3]

Also, Chatel served as theSecretary of state forConsumer Affairs andTourism from June 2007 to March 2008, andGovernment's Spokesman from June 2009 until November 2010.

Within the UMP, Chatel initially was part ofLes Réformateurs, the party’s liberal wing.

From August 2012, Chatel – alongsideJean-Pierre Raffarin,Jean Leonetti andMarc Laffineur – ledModern and Humanist France (France moderne et humaniste), a recognizedmovement within the UMP. In the UMP's2012 leadership election, he endorsedJean-François Copé.[4]

Ahead of theRepublicans2016 primaries, Chatel endorsedNicolas Sarkozy as the party’s candidate for2017 presidential elections.[5][6]
