Louis Bontes (Dutch pronunciation:[luˈʋiˈbɔntəs]; born 28 February 1956) is a Dutch politician and former police officer. He was amember of the European Parliament (2009–2010) and a member of theHouse of Representatives of the Netherlands (2010–2017) for theParty for Freedom (PVV) until 2013 and as an independent since. He was the cofounder and chairman of the political partyFor the Netherlands (VNL) from 2014 to 2015.
Louis Bontes was born on 28 February 1956 inRotterdam in the Netherlands.
He worked many years in theDutch police force, towards the end as district commanderharbor for theRotterdam-Rijnmond area.
Bontes represented theParty for Freedom (PVV) until 2013, and focused on matters of the European Union,civil law, security, police andforeign policy (Africa,Middle and South America). From 2009 to 2010, he was anMEP for the PVV. In October 2013, after Bontes talked to the media about his being disappointed with the methods of the PVV, the party's parliamentary group expelled him.[1]
Bontes remained in parliament as anindependent, and stated he would keep voting along with the PVV.[1] In May 2014, Bontes founded the political partyFor the Netherlands (VNL) with other former PVV membersJoram van Klaveren, andJohan Driessen. Bontes stepped down as chairman of VNL, afterBram Moszkowicz was selected to becomelijsttrekker in the next elections.[2]
Bontes has been banned from entry to Russia since 2015.[3]
His term in the House ended on 23 March 2017.[4]
