Early life

[edit]

Costa was born inSaint-Denis,Île-de-France,[2][3] to aCape Verdean family.[4][5]

Club career

[edit]

Having started to play football inArgenteuil,Val-d'Oise, Costa joined the youth academy ofReims in 2016.[6][7]

A player in Reims'sChampionnat National 2 reserve starting in the 2018–19 season, Costa captained the side during the following campaign.[5][6][8][9] With a few first-team appearances inLigue 1 games,[10] he was loaned toChampionnat National sideLe Mans for the2020–21 season.[2][8]

With Le Mans newly relegated fromLigue 2, he was one of the standout players in the team, and a revelation of the Championnat National, starting and playing the entirety of 26 games, as the club only narrowly missed the promotion play-offs.[2][3][4][11][12]

After this promising loan spell, Costa was offered a contract extension by Reims, but chose to look elsewhere in search of more game time.[3][4] With one year left on his contract, several clubs from France, Italy and Germany were interested in signing him.[2][3][12] He was eventually transferred toToulouse in August 2021.[2][11][13][14]

Costa made his professional debut for Toulouse on 13 November 2021, starting and playing every minute of apenalty shoot-out victory overLibourne in theCoupe de France, in which he helped his team keep a clean sheet.[15][16][17] Starting theseason behindRasmus Nicolaisen,Bafodé Diakité andAnthony Rouault, with a team aiming for promotion,[18][19] Costa first only made bench appearances inLigue 2.[20] However, he established himself as a regular starter in the Coupe de France, even scoring his first goal againstTrélissac.[20][21][22]

On 22 August 2024, Costa joinedLa Liga clubVillarreal on a six-year deal.[23] He made his debut for the club on 26 August, coming on as a substitute in a league win overCelta Vigo.[24] On 14 September, he scored his first goal for Villarreal in a 2–1 victory againstMallorca.[25]

International career

[edit]

Costa was a youth international for France, playing with theunder-16 andunder-17 teams.[8][12][13] He was also selected for theunder-19s andunder-20s, without playing any official games in a period where most of them were canceled due to theCOVID-19 pandemic.[5][6][11][14]

On 16 March 2022, he received his first international call-up for theCape Verde national team.[26][27] He debuted with Cape Verde in a 2–0friendly win overGuadeloupe.[28] He was later named in Cape Verde's squad for the2023 Africa Cup of Nations,[29] where he played in all five of their matches before they were eliminated in the quarter-finals.[30]

Controversy

[edit]

On 14 May 2023, Costa refused to participate in a Ligue 1 match againstNantes due to the game being part of a league-wide campaign againsthomophobia, with players wearing shirts with rainbow-themed decorations.[31]
