Locmaria (French pronunciation:[lɔkmaʁja];Breton:Lokmaria-ar-Gerveur) is acommune in theMorbihandepartment inBrittany in north-westernFrance.[3] Locmaria is one of the four communes ofBelle Île.
From the Bretonloc which meanshermitage (cf.:Locminé) and 'maria' which derive fromMary.
Inhabitants of Locmaria are called in FrenchLocmariaïstes.
The village occupies the eastern part of the islandBelle-Île-en-Mer. Rocky cliffs, sometimes 50 meters high, surround the territory. On the north coast, stretches the beach Les Grands Sables.
