Liv Hewson (born 29 November 1995) is an Australian actor andplaywright.[1][2][3] Their written work includes "lots of re-imaginings of fairytales and mythology with aqueer and dark slant."[4] They starred as Abby Hammond in theNetflix seriesSanta Clarita Diet from 2017 to 2019. Since 2021 they have been portraying Van Palmer in theShowtime seriesYellowjackets.
In 2014, Hewson traveled toLos Angeles[5] to attend an acting workshop. In 2016, they played the lead role of Claire Duncan in the fantasy web seriesDramaworld. In 2017, they starred in the filmBefore I Fall and had recurring roles in the second series ofTop of the Lake and in the miniseriesInhumans.[6]
Hewson was born inCanberra and wasassigned female at birth.[7] They grew up in the suburb ofHughes and attendedAlfred Deakin High School andCanberra College. Hewson has three brothers; their mother, Angela, is a public servant and their father, Tony, is a psychologist. Hewson began acting as part of the Canberra Youth Theatre. Growing up, the family watched a lot of American television shows, such asThe Simpsons andFuturama, which Hewson said made it easy to act with an American accent.[6]
In 2011, Hewsoncame out asnon-binary at age 16.[8] They are gay and usethey/them pronouns.[8][9] In 2020, Hewson received theHuman Rights Campaign Visibility Award for their LGBT+ advocacy.[10] In 2023, Hewson underwentgender affirming surgery after years of considering it. They spoke out against people's negative reactions, stating, "I am not going to entertain anybody's disgust over my body."[11]
