The sixteen constituentstates of Germany are divided into a total of 400administrativeKreis orLandkreis; these consist of 294rural districts[1] (German:Landkreise orKreise – the latter in the states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Schleswig-Holstein only), and 106urban districts (Kreisfreie Städte or, in Baden-Württemberg only,Stadtkreise – cities that constitute districts in their own right).[2][3]
