The area known today as the city of Lynn was originally part of a larger area named Saugus (part of which lives on as the Town ofSaugus). It was renamed "Lynn" in 1637 in honor ofKing's Lynn in England.[1] Lynn was incorporated as a city in 1850.[2]

When the first official minister, Samuel Whiting, arrived from King's Lynn, England, the new settlers were so excited that they changed the name of their community to Lynn in 1637 in honor of him.
