Theking of Iraq (Arabic:ملك العراق,romanized: Malik al-‘Irāq) wasIraq'shead of state andmonarch from 1921 to 1958. He served as the head of the Iraqi monarchy—theHashemite dynasty. The king was addressed asHis Majesty (Arabic:صاحب الجلالة).
In theaftermath of World War I and thedissolution of the Ottoman Empire, the three provinces (vilayets) ofOttoman Iraq came under the control of the United Kingdom. UnderBritish occupation, theIraqi Revolt broke out and the country showed itself a hard land to govern. In order to establish a pro-Britishclient state, a dynasty ofHashemite kings from theHejaz region was established, beginning withFaisal I who was the son ofHussein bin Ali. As a family originating in theHejaz, the Hashemites was foreign to Iraq. TheBritish Government appointed them as Iraq'sroyal family after aplebiscite in 1921.[1] The Hashemites were largely opposed by theIraqiShias andKurds. TheKingdom of Iraq existed until anIraqi nationalistcoup d'état in 1958 known as the14 July Revolution established theFirst Republic of Iraq.
