New jazz melodies based on the chords of existing compositions

Acontrafact is amusical composition built using thechord progression of a pre-existing piece, but with a newmelody andarrangement. Typically the original tune's progression and songform will be reused but occasionally just asection will be reused in the new composition. The term comes from classical music and was first applied to jazz by musicologists in the 1970s and 1980s.[citation needed]
