Constitutional background

Between 1902 and 1976 (under the1901 and the1940 constitutions), the role of the head of state was performed by thepresident of Cuba.

Between 1976 and 2019 (under the1976 Constitution), the position of president was abolished and replaced by the president of theCouncil of State.

On 24 February 2019 (under the2019 Constitution), the position of president was restored, effective 10 October 2019.^[1]

The current president isMiguel Díaz-Canel, since 19 April 2018.^[2]^[3]^[4]
