Yash Chopra, the founder ofYash Raj Films, pictured in 2012. He directed 13 films for the company between 1973 and 2012.

Yash Raj Films (abbreviated as YRF) is anIndianentertainment company, established by filmmakerYash Chopra in 1970, thatproduces anddistributes motion pictures.[1][2] As of 2022, the company has produced over 80Hindi films and oneTamil film. YRF started a film distribution business in 1997;[3] in addition to distributing their own productions, the company has handled the domestic and/or international distribution of over 50 films from other companies. The most frequent collaborations of the company have been with the actorsAmitabh Bachchan,Raakhee,Rishi Kapoor,Shah Rukh Khan,Kajol,Rani Mukerji,Anushka Sharma,Katrina Kaif, andSaif Ali Khan.

YRF's first release came in 1973 with the Chopra-directedDaag, a drama aboutbigamy, starringRajesh Khanna,Raakhee andSharmila Tagore.[4] The company had four more releases in the 1970s, including the ensemble romantic dramaKabhi Kabhie and the action filmKaala Patthar, both of which starredAmitabh Bachchan and Raakhee.[5] YRF's sole commercial success in the 1980s was theSridevi-starring romantic musicalChandni.[5] The year 1995 marked the directorial debut of Chopra's elder sonAditya Chopra with the highly successful romantic dramaDilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.[6][7] StarringShahrukh Khan andKajol, the film has the longest theatrical run in Indian cinema history.[8] Other successful releases of the 1990s wereDarr (1993) andDil To Pagal Hai (1997), both starring Khan.[9]

Since the 2000s, YRF produced a larger number of films. In addition to directorial ventures from Yash and Aditya, the company launched several new directors, includingSanjay Gadhvi,Vijay Krishna Acharya,Kunal Kohli,Siddharth Anand,Shaad Ali, andAli Abbas Zafar.[10] Some of the company's top-grossing films in the 2000s include Gadhvi's action thrillersDhoom (2004) andDhoom 2 (2006), Kohli's romantic thrillerFanaa (2006), Ali's crime comedyBunty Aur Babli (2005), Yash's period romantic dramaVeer-Zaara (2004), and Aditya Chopra's dramasMohabbatein (2000) andRab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008).[11] Beginning in 2008, the company introduced a number of new actors such as Anushka Sharma,Ranveer Singh,Parineeti Chopra,Arjun Kapoor,Bhumi Pednekar, andVaani Kapoor.[12]

YRF's highest-grossing films came in the 2010s with theYRF Spy Universe action thrillersEk Tha Tiger (2012),Tiger Zinda Hai (2017) andWar (2019), the action sequelDhoom 3 (2013), and the sports dramaSultan (2016). All five films rank among thehighest-grossing Hindi films of all time.[13] Following a series of commercial failures in the early 2020s,[14] the company produced the fourth instalment in the YRF Spy Universe,Pathaan (2023), starring Shah Rukh Khan and directed by Siddharth Anand, which earned over10 billion (US$120 million) to rank as the company's highest-grossing release.[13]
