In theRepublic of India, according to the Article 154 of theConstitution of the Republic of India, agovernor is the constitutional head of each of thetwenty-eight states. They rank 4th in theorder of the precedence of India. The governor is appointed by thePresident of the Republic of India for a term of five years, and holds office at the president's pleasure. They also may not have the 5 years term and is seen very rarely.
The governor isde jure head of thestate government; all its executive actions are taken in the governor's name. However, the governor must act on the advice of the popularly electedcouncil of ministers, headed by thechief minister, which thus holdsde facto executive authority at the state-level. This situation is analogous to that of thePresident and thePrime Minister at the national level. The Constitution of India also empowers the governor to appoint or dismiss aministry, recommendpresident's rule, or reserve bills for the president's assent.[1]Acharya Devvrat, theGovernor of Gujarat, is currently the longest-serving officeholder. The recent-most sworn-in governor isGoa'sAshok Gajapathi Raju. Two governors are currently holding additional charge of two different states.Ajay Kumar Bhalla,Governor of Manipur holding the additional charge asGovernor of Nagaland, while Acharya Devvrat, the Governor of Gujarat holds the additional charge asGovernor of Maharashtra.Anandiben Patel, the Governor of Uttar Pradesh (aged 84 years) is the oldest whereasAjay Kumar Bhalla, the Governor of Manipur and Nagaland (aged 65 years) is the youngest. Governors of Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand were appointed by Former PresidentRam Nath Kovind. Governors of the rest states (Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Kerala, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Telangana, West Bengal and Tripura) were appointed by incumbent President of India Droupadi Murmu.
