Hungary is aunitary parliamentary republic inCentral Europe. It covers an area of 93,030 square kilometres (35,920 sq mi), situated in theCarpathian Basin and bordered bySlovakia to the north,Romania to the east,Serbia to the south,Croatia to the southwest,Slovenia to the west,Austria to the northwest, andUkraine to the northeast. With about 10 million inhabitants, Hungary is amedium-sized member state of theEuropean Union. Theofficial language isHungarian, which is the most widely spoken non-Indo-European language in Europe.^[1] Hungary's capital andlargest metropolis isBudapest, a significant economic hub, classified as an Alpha-global city.^[2] Major urban areas includeDebrecen,Szeged,Miskolc,Pécs andGyőr.

Hungary is amiddle power and has the world's57th largest economy by nominal GDP, as well as the58th largest by PPP, out of 188 countries measured by theIMF. As a substantial actor in several industrial and technological sectors, it is both the world's36th largest exporter andimporter of goods. Hungary is ahigh-income economy with avery high standard of living. It keeps up asocial security anduniversal health care system, and a tuition-freeuniversity education.
