Under the codenameOperation Rising Lion,[a] theIsrael Defense Forces (IDF) andMossad attacked key nuclear sites, military installations, and residential areas,[1][2][3] including targeted assassinations of military and civilian personnel, many of whom were killed in their homes or in meetings.[4] Beginning on the evening of 13 June, Iran initiated retaliatory strikes against Israel, under the codenameOperation True Promise III.[b][c] The operation consisted of ballistic missiles and drones targeting military sites, intelligence sites, and residential areas.[6][7] Iran also threatened to target American, British, and French military bases if they provided assistance to Israel.[8] On 22 June, theUnited States conductedOperation Midnight Hammer, which involved airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities.[9][10] Iran responded by attacking U.S. bases in Iraq and Qatar as part ofOperation Glad Tidings of Victory.[11][12]
