Attacks againstseminary and institute buildings, historic sites,missionary training centers,meetinghouses andtemples ofthe Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the United States and other countries have taken the form of arson, vandalism, and armed attacks. This timeline documents acts of violence and major vandalism against such Latter-day Saint places of worship, historical sites, training centers, and administrative properties, including an ongoing series of arson attacks beginning in 2018.

19th century

1830–1900

  • October 1848 – TheNauvoo Temple inNauvoo, Illinois was destroyed in an act of arson.[1]
  • September 15, 1850 – InSpalding, England, a mob assaulted and overpowered a Church member who was guarding entry to a meetinghouse in use by fellow Latter-day Saints, forcing him inside; the mob then attacked the building and forced entry. On leaving the town that evening, Latter-day Saints from this congregation were later physically attacked by members of this mob.[2]
  • July 29, 1857 – Church members were attacked in a meetinghouse by locals inBirmingham, England; windows were destroyed, door hinges were torn off, and a door to the building was temporarily stolen.[3]
  • October 11, 1857 – Church members and their meetinghouse were physically attacked by locals inBristol, England.[4]
  • July 20, 1858 – Church members were attacked in a meetinghouse by locals inWhitechapel, England; windows were destroyed, Latter-day Saints were verbally abused and physically assaulted with gravel and dirt.[5]
  • August 10, 1884 – A home being used as a meetinghouse inLewis County, Tennessee was attacked by ten to twelve masked men, who shot and killed four Church members.[6] The event is known today asTennessee's Mormon Massacre.

20th century

1901–2000

  • August 8, 1901 – A meetinghouse in Davis Chapel (now known as Hale Spring)[7] inMarshall County, Kentucky was burned to the ground.[8][9]
  • June 16, 1902 – A meetinghouse was attacked in Davis Chapel (now known as Hale Spring) in Marshall County, Kentucky, resulting in one church convert being wounded in the leg by gunshot.[9]
  • 1904 – Residents ofHarkers Island, North Carolina threw rocks and shot a bullet at a meetinghouse.[10]
  • January 16, 1906 – A meetinghouse in Harkers Island, North Carolina was burned to the ground by arsonists.[10][11][12][13]
  • November 18, 1912 – A meetinghouse was attacked by a mob of 300 people inBristol, England during Church services.[14]
  • November 14, 1962 – TheSalt Lake Temple was bombed with a plastic explosive, shattering one of its doors and eleven of its windows.[15]
  • April 1, 1963 – A meetinghouse under construction inPorto Alegre, Brazil was bombed.[16]
  • December 16, 1970 – A meetinghouse inHayward, California was damaged in an act of arson, resulting in $200,000 in damages.[17]
  • November 7, 1973 – A meetinghouse inScottsdale, Arizona was damaged in an act of arson.[18]
  • February 20, 1980 – A meetinghouse inTooele, Utah was damaged by a bomb in its parking lot, causing about $5,000 in damages.[19]
  • May 1980 – Astake center that had not yet been completed was destroyed in an act of arson inCody, Wyoming.[20]
  • October 3, 1983 – A meetinghouse inLancaster, Pennsylvania was damaged in an act of arson related to a burglary, resulting in $25,000 in damages.[21]
  • January 1984 – A meetinghouse inMarlboro, Massachusetts was totally destroyed in an act of arson just shortly after it had been built, resulting in $500,000 worth of damages.[22][23]
  • July 4, 1985 – Two meetinghouses inConcepción, Chile were bombed; meetinghouses inLota, Chile andCoronel, Chile suffered minor damage from bombs around the same time.[24]
  • April 22–23, 1986 – Five meetinghouses inSantiago, Chile were bombed.[25]
  • May 4, 1986 – A stake center inKirtland, Ohio was burned to the ground by an arsonist, destroying a library of historical records.[26][27]
  • October 23, 1986 – Clarence Leake took two hostages inside theWashington D.C. Temple inKensington, Maryland during a 12-hour standoff with police.[28][29]
  • January 16, 1988 – A meetinghouse inMarion, Utah was bombed.[30][31]
  • July 5–6, 1988 – A meetinghouse inSalt Lake City, Utah was vandalized.[32]
  • July 29, 1988 – Bomb placed outside a side door at theStockholm Sweden Temple, the explosion caused minor damage.[33]
  • July 4, 1989 – Seven masked assailants entered a meetinghouse in theLa Florida district of Santiago, Chile, forced a missionary at gunpoint to undress, then threw a firebomb into the meetinghouse library.[34]
  • July 10, 1989 – A meetinghouse inSanta Cruz, Bolivia was bombed.[35]
  • September 6, 1989 – A meetinghouse in Santiago, Chile was bombed.[36]
  • December 24. 1989 – Meetinghouses in Santiago, Chile and other Chilean cities were bombed.[37]
  • December 26, 1989 – Two meetinghouses inChiclayo, Peru were bombed.[37]
  • December 27, 1989 – A meetinghouse inQuilpué, Chile was bombed.[37]
  • December 29, 1989 – TheLima Peru Temple inLima, Peru was attacked with dynamite.[38]
  • January 2, 1990 – The Omar-Torrijos Anti-Intervention Command group firebombed a meetinghouse inCaracas, Venezuela.[39][40]
  • October 5, 1990 – A meetinghouse was bombed in the La Florida district of Santiago, Chile.[41]
  • November 27, 1990 – A meetinghouse inTaylorsville, Utah was damaged in arson during a volleyball tournament inside consisting of about 150 players and spectators; the meetinghouse was evacuated. Nobody is reported to have died; about $1,500 worth of damages was caused.[42][43]
  • December 6, 1990 – Four meetinghouses were bombed in Santiago, Chile.[44]
  • January 20, 1991 – A meetinghouse inRio de Janeiro, Brazil was damaged in an attack with two bombs.[45]
  • January 22, 1991 – A meetinghouse inPhoenix, Arizona was damaged in an act of arson, resulting in about $20,000 worth of damages.[46]
  • February 13, 1991 – A meetinghouse in theMaipu district of Santiago, Chile was bombed, suffering minor damage.[47][48]
  • April 14, 1991 – A meetinghouse inProvo, Utah was bombed.[49]
  • July 7, 1991 – A meetinghouse in Chile was bombed.[50]
  • July 20, 1991 – A meetinghouse and family history centre inLoughborough, Leistershire, England was damaged in an act of arson.[51]
  • December 22, 1991 – Six bombs were set off in Chile: five in Santiago and one inValdivia; two of the targeted sites were meetinghouses of the Church.[52]
  • March 29, 1992 – A meetinghouse was bombed in Santiago, Chile.[53]
  • July 21, 1992 – A meetinghouse was bombed inTemuco, Chile.[54]
  • July 27, 1992 – A meetinghouse was bombed in Santiago, Chile.[55]
  • November 2, 1992 – A meetinghouse inButte, Montana was damaged in an act of arson.[56][57]
  • February 7, 1993 – During an address byHoward W. Hunter (then the President of the LDS Church'sQuorum of the Twelve Apostles) at theMarriott Center atBrigham Young University (owned by the LDS Church) in Provo, Utah, Cody Robert Judy entered the center and threatened Hunter directly with the detonation of a bomb (which was later found to be fake).[58][59][60][61][62]
  • February 20, 1993 – A meetinghouse inEssex, Maryland was damaged in an act of arson, resulting in $3 million worth of damages.[63][64]
  • July 24–25, 1993 – Nearly a dozen meetinghouses inDavis County, Utah were vandalized over the course of a weekend; locks were glued, windows were smashed, and some vehicles were also damaged. The meetinghouses were located inFarmington,Kaysville,Layton,Clinton, andClearfield.[65]
  • March 14, 1997 – A meetinghouse inSouth Jordan, Utah was burned in an act of arson; its organ was destroyed in the fire.[66][43]
  • May 1997 – A meetinghouse inAbbotsford, British Columbia was burned in an act of arson.[67]
  • June 28, 1998 – A meetinghouse inRoswell, New Mexico was burned in an act of arson, resulting in $2.5 million in damages.[68][69][70]
  • April 15, 1999 – TheFamily History Library inSalt Lake City,Utah became the scene of amass shooting; the shooting left 3 dead (including the perpetrator) and several injured.[71][72]
  • January 3, 2000 – A meetinghouse and seminary building inSandy, Utah was damaged in an act of arson.[43][73][74]
  • April 10, 2000 – A man drove a pickup truck through the glass doors, foyer, and gymnasium of a meetinghouse inPowell, Wyoming. He had reportedly become angered at being asked not to smoke in the building. He was the only individual injured.[75]

21st century

2001–2010

  • January 20–21, 2001 – A meetinghouse inGig Harbor, Washington was vandalized, resulting in damages around $40,000 to $50,000.[76][77]
  • May 25, 2001 – A meetinghouse in Sandy, Utah was vandalized, resulting in at least $100,000 worth of damages.[78]
  • June 12, 2001 – A meetinghouse inWest Valley City, Utah was burned in an act of arson, resulting in $300,000 worth of damages.[43][78]
  • June 22, 2001 – A meetinghouse in Salt Lake City, Utah was vandalized.[78][79]
  • July 3, 2001 – A meetinghouse inLexington, Ohio was burned in an act of arson.[80]
  • July 22, 2001 – A meetinghouse inNephi, Utah was vandalized with graffiti.[81][82]
  • June 30, 2002 – A meetinghouse inLansing, Michigan was leveled due to an act of arson, resulting in approximately $5 million worth of damages.[83]
  • April 6, 2003 – A meetinghouse inMurray, Utah was burned in an act of arson, resulting in damages worth less than $5,000.[43][84]
  • August 2, 2003 – A meetinghouse inKearns, Utah was burned in an act of arson; the man responsible for the arson also stole a Church checkbook from the building, which led to his capture.[85][86][87][88][89]
  • June 24, 2004 – A meetinghouse's trees were destroyed inRiverton, Utah, resulting in approximately $10,000 worth of damages.[90]
  • December 11, 2004 – A man armed with an ax damaged aChristus statue at the visitor center of theOakland California Temple.[91]
  • December 29, 2004 – A meetinghouse in Sandy, Utah was vandalized with derogatory remarks towards homosexuals, blacks, and members of the Church spray-painted; this resulted in several thousand dollars' worth of damages.[92]
  • February 27, 2005 – A meetinghouse inRose, Idaho was burned by arsonists who piled up charred furniture at the front entrance and set the structure a fire.[93]
  • September 7, 2005 – A meetinghouse under construction inNorth Las Vegas, Nevada was burned by arsonist's fire. The $3 million building was a complete loss.[94][95]
  • July 28, 2006 – A meetinghouse inSpringville, Utah was burned in an act of arson.[96][97]
  • November 19, 2007 – A meetinghouse inMesa, Arizona was burned.[98][99]
  • January 14, 2008 – A seminary building in Salt Lake City, Utah was vandalized with graffiti.[100]
  • February 15, 2008 – A seminary building inFarmington, New Mexico was damaged in an act of arson.[101][102]
  • November 13, 2008 – An envelope containing white powder was sent to and opened in the Salt Lake Temple; around the same time, similar substances were sent to theLos Angeles California Temple and to a Catholic fraternity. The substances were later found not to be hazardous.[103][104]
  • November 24, 2008 – A meetinghouse inFarmington, Utah was damaged in an act of vandalism.[105]
  • September 7–8, 2009 – A meetinghouse in the Sellwood area ofPortland, Oregon was vandalized, resulting in thousands of dollars' worth of damage.[106]
  • August 29, 2010 – Abishop was shot and killed in his office at one of the Church's meetinghouses inVisalia, California.[107]
  • October 17, 2010 – A meetinghouse inMukilteo, Washington was burned.[108][109]
  • October 30, 2010 – Two meetinghouses in Salt Lake City, Utah were burned in acts of arson.[110]

2011–2020

  • December 16, 2011 – A meetinghouse inSantaquin, Utah was burned.[111]
  • June 9, 2012 – Two meetinghouses inLogan, Utah (as well as nine other buildings pertaining to other religions/churches) were damaged in an act of vandalism.[112]
  • June 29, 2012 – A fire that destroyed a 50-year-old meetinghouse inTolleson, Arizona was confirmed to be the work of an arsonist.[113]
  • June 30 – July 1, 2012 – A meetinghouse inCedar City, Utah was vandalized, resulting in tens of thousands of dollars in damage.[114]
  • September 25, 2012 – A meetinghouse inSpokane, Washington was damaged in an act of arson.[115]
  • May 5, 2013 – A failedMolotov cocktail was thrown through the window of a meetinghouse inOgden, Utah; the remains of the incendiary device still caused approximately $1,000 in damage.[116]
  • May 13, 2013 – A meetinghouse inMagna, Utah was burned in an act of arson.[117]
  • November 7, 2013 – Three meetinghouses inChubbuck, Idaho were damaged in acts of vandalism, with obscenities and antagonistic slurs painted thereon.[118][119][120][121]
  • July 15, 2014 – A meetinghouse inFrenchtown, Montana was damaged in an act of vandalism.[122]
  • October 15, 2014 – Two men and a male minor broke in and vandalized a meetinghouse inDuchesne, Utah; they also stole various items and about $500 of tithing money.[123]
  • July 14, 2015 – A week after a meetinghouse in theGlassell Park area ofLos Angeles, California was burned due to a brush fire, a local gang defaced the remains of the building with graffiti.[124]
  • August 23, 2015 – The construction site of theFort Collins Colorado Temple was damaged in an act of vandalism.[125][126]
  • March 25–26, 2016 – The construction site of theMeridian Idaho Temple was vandalized.[127][128][129]
  • April 9, 2016 – A meetinghouse inVancouver, Washington was vandalized.[130]
  • July 26, 2016 – A meetinghouse inLas Vegas, Nevada was burned in an act of arson. A firefighter's union hall across the street was also targeted.[131]
  • November 12, 2016 – The outbuilding of a meetinghouse inRexburg, Idaho was vandalized with spray paint.[132]
  • December 10, 2016 – A meetinghouse inGuelph, Ontario was damaged in an act of vandalism.[133]
  • October 18–19, 2017 – A meetinghouse inDublin, Ohio was vandalized.[134]
  • January 9, 2018 – A meetinghouse in Twin Falls, Idaho was vandalized with graffiti.[135]
  • May 7, 2018 – A meetinghouse inIdaho Falls, Idaho was vandalized with graffiti.[136]
  • May 12, 2018 – A man broke into theSt. George Utah Temple, broke its windows, attacked some of its temple workers, and smeared blood through an area of the temple.[137][138]
  • July 14–15, 2018 – A meetinghouse inMillcreek, Utah was vandalized.[139]
  • July 22, 2018 – A gunman entered a meetinghouse inFallon, Nevada, killing one person and injuring another.[140][141]
  • August 26–27, 2018 – The interior of a meetinghouse inSpanish Fork, Utah was vandalized, resulting in $5,000 worth of damages.[142][143]
  • November 17, 2018 – A teenager assaulted and strangled a 70-year-old female organist who was rehearsing on the organ at a meetinghouse inCenterville, Utah; the attacker is believed to have gained entry to the meetinghouse by throwing a rock through one of its windows.[144][145]
  • December 2, 2018 – Five people were injured in a mass knife attack at a meetinghouse inGoiânia, Brazil.[146]
  • December 4, 2018 – A couch was set on fire in an attempt to burn down a meetinghouse inFort Collins, Colorado.[147]
  • January 26, 2019 – A meetinghouse inSt. George, Utah was burned down in an act of arson. AnEpiscopal church was also targeted.[148]
  • March 13, 2019 – Two meetinghouses inGreymouth andChristchurch, New Zealand, were burned in acts of arson.[149][150]
  • March 29, 2019 – Two meetinghouses inOrem, Utah were burned and defaced with the words "Satan Lives".[151]

  • April 7, 2019 – A meetinghouse inTejupilco de Hidalgo, México State was burned in an act of arson; a Catholic church was also burned.[156][157]
  • May 15, 2019 – A meetinghouse inBoise, Idaho was vandalized, one of its windowpanes being damaged.[158]
  • May 18–19, 2019 – A meetinghouse and its fence in Provo, Utah were vandalized with graffiti with hateful religious and political speech.[159]
  • June 1, 2019 – A meetinghouse in Boise, Idaho was broken into, with some of its glass being broken.[158]
  • June 1, 2019 – A meetinghouse in Farmington, New Mexico was burned in an act of arson.[160][161]

  • July 23, 2019 – A gunman fired his weapon at a group of individuals at a meetinghouse parking lot in St. George, Utah.[170]
  • August 12, 2019 – An intentional fire was set in a meetinghouse inLayton, Utah.[171]
  • August 16, 2019 – A meetinghouse inLogandale, Nevada was targeted in an act of attempted arson.[172]
  • October 11–12, 2019 – A meetinghouse in Boise, Idaho was vandalized.[158][173]
  • December 24, 2019 – A man broke into and vandalized theLogan Utah Temple.[174]
  • January 9, 2020 – Joshua Adams Hale pled guilty to willfully and maliciously set fire to and burned the chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints inCherry Creek, South Dakota.[175]
  • February 5, 2020 – A missionary training center inSão Paulo, Brazil was infiltrated by an intruder armed with a knife; the intruder was shot and killed by police.[176]
  • May 26, 2020 – Honolulu police launched an arson investigation involving an early morning church fire inKalaeloa, Hawaii that investigators determined was intentionally set.[177]
  • June 2, 2020 – A meetinghouse inPlano, Texas suffered under $30,000 worth of damage on one of the exterior walls of its property.[178]
  • August 3, 2020 – A gunman fired shots at the church's missionary training center in Provo, Utah.[179]
  • September 7, 2020 – A meetinghouse inEagle Mountain, Utah was vandalized and partially burned.[180]
  • November 12, 2020 – A meetinghouse was vandalized inMoab, Utah.[181]
