Theambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Brunei Darussalam is the official representative of thepresident and thegovernment of the Russian Federation to thesultan and thegovernment of Brunei.[1][2][3][4]
The ambassador and his staff work at large in theEmbassy of Russia inBandar Seri Begawan.[5] The post of Russian ambassador to Brunei is currently held byMikhail Baranov [ru], incumbent since 17 January 2023.[6]
In 1987,Soviet General SecretaryMikhail Gorbachev called for the establishment ofdiplomatic relations withBrunei.[7] Although theSoviet ambassador to Singapore attempted to establish relations with Brunei in 1988, the Sultanate was unprepared to establish relations with theCommunist state at the time. On 1 October 1991, Brunei established relations with the Soviet Union,[8][9] and Soviet relations with the Sultanate were initially handled via theSoviet embassy inKuala Lumpur,Malaysia.[10] The first ambassadors to Brunei werenon-resident ambassadors, accredited to Brunei in addition to their posts asambassadors of Russia to Malaysia. The first ambassador accredited solely to Brunei wasViktor Seleznyov [ru], appointed on 31 July 2009.
