Wicked (also known asWicked: Part I) is a 2024 Americanmusicalfantasy film directed byJon M. Chu and written byWinnie Holzman andDana Fox.^[1] It adapts the first act of the2003 stage musical byStephen Schwartz and Holzman, which was loosely based onGregory Maguire's1995 novel, itself a reimagining ofL. Frank Baum'sThe Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its1939 film adaptation. The film starsCynthia Erivo asElphaba Thropp andAriana Grande^[a] asGalinda Upland, withJonathan Bailey,Ethan Slater,Bowen Yang,Marissa Bode,Peter Dinklage,Michelle Yeoh andJeff Goldblum in supporting roles.^[3] Set in theLand of Oz prior toDorothy Gale's arrival from Kansas, its plot follows Elphaba, the futureWicked Witch of the West, and her friendship with her classmate Galinda, who becomesGlinda the Good.

Universal Pictures andMarc Platt, who both produced the stage musical, announced the film adaptation in 2012. After a long development and multiple delays, partlydue to the COVID-19 pandemic, Chu was hired to direct, with Erivo and Grande cast in 2021. The adaptation was split into two parts to avoid omitting plot points and further develop the characters.Principal photography began in England in December 2022, was interrupted in July 2023 by the2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, and resumed and concluded in January 2024.

Wicked premiered at theState Theatre in Sydney, Australia, on November 3, 2024, and was theatrically released in the United States on November 22. The film received critical acclaim and grossed$756 million worldwide on a$150 million budget. It was named one of the top 10 films of 2024 by theAmerican Film Institute and wonBest Film at theNational Board of Review, becoming the first fantasy film to win the award and first musical to win sinceMoulin Rouge! (2001).^[4]

At the97th Academy Awards, the film received ten nominations, includingBest Picture,Best Actress for Erivo, andBest Supporting Actress for Grande.^[5] It wonCinematic and Box Office Achievement at the82nd Golden Globe Awards, where it was also nominated forBest Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.^[6] At the30th Critics' Choice Awards,Wicked tied withConclave for a leading eleven nominations, includingBest Picture;^[7] Chu ultimately wonBest Director, atop wins forBest Costume Design andBest Production Design. The film received a record-tying five nominations at the31st Screen Actors Guild Awards, includingOutstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for Bailey,Outstanding Performance by a Cast, andOutstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble.^[8]
