Lagaan (English:Taxation) is a 2001 Indiansportsdrama film, written and directed byAshutosh Gowariker. The film starsAamir Khan, who also produced the film, andGracy Singh in the lead roles.[1]Yashpal Sharma,Raghubir Yadav,Rachel Shelley, andPaul Blackthorne feature in supporting roles.[2] The film was edited by Ballu Saluja, with music and cinematography provided byA. R. Rahman, andAnil Mehta respectively.[3]Lagaan is set in India in 1893, during theBritish Raj. The film tells the story of a small village whose inhabitants are oppressed by high taxes. They are challenged to acricket match by an arrogant officer as a wager to avoid the taxes.[4][5]

Lagaan was released on 15 June 2001.[6] The film grossed over1.3 billion (US$15 million) globally on a production budget of250 million (US$3.0 million).[7][8] It received nominations, and awards in several categories both in India and internationally, with particular praise for its direction, acting and landscapes.

Lagaan was nominated for theBest Foreign Language Film at the74th Academy Awards, becoming the third Indian film to be nominated in the category afterMother India (1957), andSalaam Bombay! (1988).[9] At the49th National Film Awards, the film won a total of eight awards, including forBest Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. It also won eight honours at the47th Filmfare AwardsBest Film,Best Director, andBest Story awards for Gowariker and theBest Actor award for Khan. At the 8thScreen Awards,Lagaan received nominations forBest Story, andBest Actor, going on to winBest Film andBest Director. The film also won nine awards at the3rd IIFA Awards, includingBest Actor, andBest Movie.

Channel 4 listedLagaan at number 14 in its list of "Top 50 Films to See Before you Die".[10] In 2010, the film was ranked at number 55 in theEmpire list of "The 100 Best Films of World Cinema".[11] In 2011, it was listed inTime's list of "The All-Time 25 Best Sports Movies".[12][13] The film was also included inCNN-IBN's list of the "100 greatest Indian films of all time" in 2013.[14]
