TheUK Albums Chart is one of many music charts compiled by theOfficial Charts Company that calculates the best-selling albums of the week in the United Kingdom.[1][2][3] Before 2004, the chart was only based on the sales of physical albums. This list shows albums that peaked in the Top 10 of theUK Albums Chart during1997, as well as albums which peaked in1996 and1998 but were in the top 10 in 1997. The entry date is when the album appeared in the top ten for the first time (week ending, as published by the Official Charts Company, which is six days after the chart is announced).
The first new number-one album of the year wasEvita: The Complete Motion Picture Music Soundtrack byMadonna and Various artists. Overall, twenty different albums peaked at number-one in 1997, with twenty unique artists hitting that position.
Oasis had the best-selling album of the year withBe Here Now.Urban Hymns byThe Verve came in second placeSpice by theSpice Girls,Spiceworld by theSpice Girls andWhite on Blonde byTexas made up the top five. Albums byThe Prodigy,Celine Dion,Radiohead,Eternal andWham! were also in thetop-ten best selling albums of the year.
