Since the inauguration ofNobel Prize in 1901, until 2024, threeBengali persons and one Bengali origin person—four in all, have won this award. The first Bengali as well as the first Asian to be awarded the Nobel Prize in 1913, wasRabindranath Tagore (born inBritish India, nowIndia), in literature.[1] Later in 1998,Amartya Sen (born inBritish India, nowIndia) in Economics, in 2006Muhammad Yunus (born inBritish India, nowBangladesh) in Peace,[2] and in 2019Abhijit Banerjee (born inIndia), won this award in Economics.[3]
