Liselotte Carola Gröner (31 May 1954 – 9 September 2019[1]) was aGermanpolitician and, from 1989 to 2009, was aMember of the European Parliament with theSocial Democratic Party of Germany, part of theSocialist Group. She sat on theEuropean Parliament'sCommittee on Culture and Education and itsCommittee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality.

She was a substitute for theCommittee on Budgets, substitute for the Delegation for relations with the countries ofSouth Asia and theSouth Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).

Personal life

Gröner was a lesbian and was married to Sabine Gillessen. The couplemarried in Belgium in September 2005, with Gröner announcing, "There is no discrimination of same-sex couples in Belgium by law. And this is the signal we want to give to the people in Europe, to send the message out: it's possible to honor the love of same-sex people by law".[2]
