TheLipotrophidae are a family ofparasitic alveolates in thephylumApicomplexa. Species in this family infect insects (Diptera,Lepidoptera,Coleoptera andHymenoptera).
This family was created by Grasse in 1953.[1]
Six genera are currently recognised in this family.
Merogony generally occurs by budding from surface ofmeront to form uniformly sizedmerozoites. The gametes are similar (isogametes) and fuse to form navicularoocysts which have pronounced polar thickenings. The oocysts contain eight (rarely four)sporozoites.
