Thelingual septum consists of a vertical layer of fibrous tissue, extending throughout the entire length of themedian plane of thetongue, though not quite reaching thedorsum. The lingual septum is closely associated with thehyoglossus membrane, allowing the binding of the tongue to thehyoid muscles.[1]

It is thicker behind than in front, and occasionally contains a smallfibrocartilage, about 6 mm. in length.
