Lindenbergia is a genus ofherbaceous plants in the orderLamiales and in the broomrape familyOrobanchaceae. It is one of the few genera of the family which are not parasitic. It contains about 15 species found from northeast Africa across Asia to the Philippines,[2] and is most abundant in India.[3]
The genusLindenbergia was erected byJohann Lehmann in 1829.[1] It is named in honor ofJohann Bernhard Wilhelm Lindenberg, a lawyer andbryologist from Germany.[4]Lindenbergia was originally placed in the familyScrophulariaceae.[1]Molecular phylogenetic studies have caused that family to be split up, with many genera, includingLindenbergia, placed in a greatly expanded family Orobanchaceae.[5][6]
Lindenbergia has been placed in the tribe Lindenbergieae,[7] one of twobasal clades in the family Orobanchaceae that are not parasitic:[6]
