Clarence Linden Garnett Ashby III (born May 23, 1960) is an American actor.[1] On television, he portrayed Brett Cooper on the final two seasons of theFox soap operaMelrose Place (1997–1999) and Sheriff Noah Stilinski on all six seasons of theMTV supernatural dramaTeen Wolf (2011–2017). He is also known for portrayingJohnny Cage in the 1995 filmMortal Kombat, an adaptation of thevideo game franchise of the same name.
Ashby was born inAtlantic Beach, Florida, the son of Eleanor (Johnson), a civic organizer, and Clarence Linden Garnett Ashby Jr., apharmaceuticals manufacturer.[1][2] Ashby graduated fromThe Bolles School, a private school located inJacksonville, Florida.[3] He attendedFort Lewis College inDurango, Colorado, but dropped out his junior year to pursue an acting career. Ashby studied acting atNeighborhood Playhouse inNew York City.[4][5]
Ashby's first role on television, in 1985, was on theABC soap operaLoving, where he was the second actor to play the role of Curtis Alden. Soon after, he was cast asLance Reventlow, the only son of Woolworth heiressBarbara Hutton (played byFarrah Fawcett) in theGolden Globe-winning miniseriesPoor Little Rich Girl: The Barbara Hutton Story.[5]
Drawing on his martial arts background, Ashby portrayed Johnny Cage inMortal Kombat, the 1995 film adaptation ofthe video game of the same name; the film became a cult classic.[6] He would later return to voice Johnny Cage in theMortal Kombat 11 video game.[7]
In the second quarter of 1997, Ashby starred in the short-lived ABC dramaSpy Game.[8] Later that year, he joined the main cast ofMelrose Place asBrett Cooper, a role he had until the start of the seventh season in late 1998. He first appeared on the show in thefirst season in 1993 asJo Reynolds's estranged husband Charles, in the episodes "Peanut Butter and Jealousy" and "Single White Sister". He was in the movieWyatt Earp where he playedMorgan Earp,Wyatt Earp's (Kevin Costner) younger brother. He playedCameron Kirsten on theCBS soap operaThe Young and the Restless from 2003 to 2004.[9]
In 2007, Ashby appeared as Chase, a cowboy and ex-cop survivor inResident Evil: Extinction, the third installment of theResident Evil film series. In the following year, he was cast in the2008 remake ofProm Night.[10] He also began playing the role of Paul Hollingsworth onDays of Our Lives in March 2008.
In 2011, Ashby started portraying Noah Stilinski,Beacon Hills' sheriff and father toStiles, on MTV'sTeen Wolf series. He was in the show for six seasons until it ended in 2017.[11] For his portrayal of Sheriff Stilinski in the sixth season, he received a nomination forBest Supporting Actor on a Television Series at the43rd Saturn Awards.[12] He also had a brief role in theMarvel Studios'Iron Man 3 in 2013.[13]
In September 2021, it was announced that a reunion film forTeen Wolf had been ordered byParamount+, withJeff Davis returning as a screenwriter and executive producer of the film. The majority of the original cast members, including Ashby, were set to reprise their roles.[14][15] The film was released on January 26, 2023. Ashby also appeared in the 2022Netflix moviePurple Hearts as Jacob Morrow Sr.[16]
In May 2023, Ashby reprised his role as Cameron onThe Young and the Restless. After a month, Ashby departed from the series when Cameron was killed off in an episode that aired on June 16.[17] The next year, Ashby was nominated for theDaytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Performer in a Drama Series for his role as Cameron.[18] On July 30, 2024, it was announced that Ashby would reprise his role again.[19]
Ashby is married to actressSusan Walters. The couple met on the set ofLoving in 1983, where she was a regular and he was filming a guest appearance. (He would later become a regular cast member in 1985.)[4] They have two daughters, born in 1991 and 1992.
Linden began boxing at an early age and was anamateur boxer before studyingKarate in his twenties. In karate, he holds a blue belt.[20][21]
Linden has admitted to previously sufferingpanic attacks before auditions which threatened to shorten his career.[22]
