Lina Ishaq (born June 22, 1972) is a Swedish-Iraqiterrorist convicted ofgenocide in Syria.[1]
Born inIraq, Ishaq came to Sweden as a child with her family who settled inHalmstad. She grew up in a Christian family and attended high school atSannarpsgymnasiet in Halmstad, and played football forAstrio in theDamallsvenskan.[2]
In 2013, she was radicalized in Halmstad, and moved with her husband and five children toIS-controlledRaqqa in Syria.
Two of the children died after being recruited as soldiers for IS, they were 18 and 14 years old respectively.
Ishaq came back to Sweden in 2020. In January 2024, she was sentenced by theDistrict Court to six years in prison for a crime against international law and war crime. According to the indictment, Ishaq kept six children and three women as slaves during the winter and spring of 2015 in her home in Raqqa.[3]
On 11 November 2025, theCourt of Appeal upheld the District Court's verdict. Lina Ishaq was sentenced to 12 years in prison for genocide.
Prosecutor Reena Devgun from the EU's judicial cooperation agencyEurojust described the verdict against Lina Ishaq in an article inAftonbladet as "groundbreaking" as it is the first in the world to focus on the forced transfer of children.[4]
