Statue of Deng Xiaoping

[edit]

A 6-meter-high statue of formerChinese leaderDeng Xiaoping stands on a hilltop at the center of the park and dominates the monumental perspective ofFutian, marking the northern end of an axial composition that evokes urban design patterns of Imperial China.[4]: 1514  It was created by sculptorTeng Wenjing[5] following a 1995 decision by theShenzhen Municipal Committee to erect a memorial to Deng that would be inaugurated on the 20th anniversary ofShekouSpecial Economic Zone.[6] As the project generated controversy, the statue was kept for some time in a warehouse while its fate remained unclear, until it was eventually unveiled in November 2000 in the presence ofCCP general secretaryJiang Zemin.[4]: 1513

The statue shows Deng walking briskly, a reference to his words that "The step ofreform and opening-up should be bigger."[6][7]: 111  On its pedestal is acalligraphy by Deng's successorJiang Zemin.[8] The statue is 6 metres tall and weighs six tons.[7]: 111

The statue was visited byPremierLi Keqiang in 2015[9] and by CCP general secretaryXi Jinping in 2020[10] as they paid homage to Deng's role in Shenzhen's development.
