Apart from making 6Premier League appearances forDerby County he spent his whole career in theFootball League and made 11 senior appearances forWales.
Price was born inBournemouth and was an academy player atSouthampton but fell out with the goalkeeping coach. He had a trial atFulham but joined Ipswich Town in October 2001 and graduated through the youth system.[3][4] He representedDorset in county matches at under-15 and under-16 levels.[4] He became known for stepping in forKelvin Davis during the2004–05 season and saving a penalty against Coventry.[5] After Davies returned from injury, Price played forCambridge United on loan for part of the season.[6] Davis departed at the end of the 2004–05 season, with Price contestingShane Supple to be first choice goalkeeper.
He then started nearly every game ahead of first choice keeperShane Supple.[7] In the 2006–07 season, just a week afterPetr Čech andCarlo Cudicini sustained horrific injuries which brought up an argument that goalkeepers need more protection, Price was injured in Ipswich's 3–1 victory overSouthend United. Price had to be stretchered off after colliding withMatt Harrold.
Despite playing well for Ipswich when called upon, the arrival ofNeil Alexander at Ipswich meant Price's future was destined to be away from Portman Road.
On 27 July 2007, Price joinedPremier League clubDerby County, for an undisclosed fee on a three-year contract, to provide back-up and competition for then first choice goalkeeperStephen Bywater.[8]
Price made his debut for Derby against Liverpool on 26 December, after Stephen Bywater was injured in the warm-up and went on to start the next eight league and cup matches before the signing ofRoy Carroll ended his run in the first team.[9] In theFA Cup third round replay between Derby andSheffield Wednesday, Price made two penalty saves helping Derby to victory in apenalty shootout.
Price signed forMilton Keynes Dons on an emergency one-month loan on 27 October 2008,[10] and made his debut the next day in the Dons 2–1Football League One victory overLeyton Orient.[11] He returned to Derby but, again, could not supplant teammates Stephen Bywater and Roy Carroll from the goalkeepers spot and joinedLuton Town on a one-month loan on 2 February 2009.[12] During his time at Luton he played only twice because of a groin injury,[13] but impressed in those two games, helping Luton to theFootball League Trophy final atWembley Stadium, making two penalty saves against Brighton.
Price joinedLeague One sideBrentford on a season-long loan deal on 8 July 2009.[14] He made 18 appearances for Brentford, but didn't make an appearance after January due to the arrival ofWojciech Szczęsny, who was on loan fromArsenal at the time.[15] Upon his return to Derby at the end of the 2009–10 season, it was announced that his contract would not be renewed and he left the club with just nine appearances in his three-years there.[16][6]
After leaving the Rams, Price signed a 3-year contract to joinCrystal Palace as understudy toJulián Speroni. He made his Palace debut in March againstBurnley after Speroni had suffered an injury.[17] On Friday 11 April 2014, Price signed for League 2 sideMansfield Town on loan as emergency goalkeeper cover for the injuredAlan Marriott.[3] On 17 November 2014, Price signed on loan withLeague One clubCrawley Town until 20 December.[18] At the end of his loan spell he returned toCrystal Palace but on 16 January 2015 it was announced that he had rejoined Crawley until the end of the season.[19] Price was not offered a new contract by Palace at the end of the 2014–15 season.[20]
Following his release fromCrystal Palace, he signed a one-year contract withChampionship sideSheffield Wednesday.[21]
At the end of his contract at Sheffield Wednesday, Price signed a two-year deal with Championship sideRotherham United.[22] He was released by Rotherham at the end of the 2017–18 season,[23] but re-signed for the club on a two–year deal on 6 July 2018.[24] On 6 November 2020, Price was released byRotherham United after four years with the club.[25] It was to be his last club as a player before retiring from the game.[26]
Price received his first call-up to the fullWales international squad for a friendly againstSlovenia on 17 August 2005, but missed out on his firstcap after he was forced to withdraw with a knee injury.[27] He then made his debut againstCyprus on 17 November 2005.[28] He won the last of his 11 caps in a 2–02014 World Cup qualifying defeat toCroatia on 16 October 2012.[28]
Following retirement as a player, Price joinedAFC Bournemouth as goalkeeping coach for the club's U21 side in November 2020.[26] After half a season in the role, in August 2021 he joined previous loan clubLeague One clubMilton Keynes Dons as First-Team Goalkeeping Coach under newly appointed Head CoachLiam Manning.[29]
